Jacob Markstrom stopped 26 shots but the Panthers could not help him earn the victory in a 4-3 loss to Nashville. Markstrom is struggling early on this year with a 1-3-0 record, .862 save percentage and 3.60 goals against average.

The Florida Panthers didn't do many favors, but Jacob Markstrom wasn't lights out either in a 3-0 loss to the Los Angeles Kings on Sunday. Markstrom allowed three goals on 29 shots, with that trio of tallies coming at even strength. Some might be disappointed that he allowed goals by marginal wingers Dan Carcillo and Jordan Nolan, but the Kings dominated play, so the loss shouldn't be pinned on the big Swede. Markstrom might need a better supporting cast to really be valuable, so he might be higher on the radar in 2014-15.

Jacob Markstrom allowed six goals on 24 shots Thursday as the Panthers were drubbed by Tampa Bay by a score of 7-2. Markstrom was replaced by Scott Clemmensen with about 10 minutes remaining in the contest, but the damage had already been done. Though he has only seen limited action playing behind Tim Thomas, his numbers are cringe-worthy as his GAA is currently 3.93 while his save percentage is .855.

Jacob Markstrom will be in goal for Florida Thursday night against Tampa Bay. Coach Kevin Dineen revealed that Markstrom was initially scheduled to start against the Lightning anyway because the Panthers play again on Friday versus Pittsburgh in a back-to-back situation. Tim Thomas is day-to-day with a groin issue, so Scott Clemmensen could play the Penguins if Markstrom isn't given both contests.

Jacob Markstrom was perfect in relief of Tim Thomas Tuesday night, but his team could not recover from an early hole as the youngster made 17 saves in a no-decision. Markstrom was much better in his second relief performance in three days, and may have earned himself the start for Thursday's game regardless Thomas' availability. The 23 year-old allowed two goals on six shots in Saturday's ugly loss to St. Louis.

Jacob Markstrom replaced Tim Thomas to start the third period and gave up two goals on six shots. It was Markstrom's first action in the 2013-14 season as veteran Tim Thomas has started the first two games. Markstrom is still touted as the Panthers goalie of the future but the title has been given to him in each of the last four seasons and it's starting to become old news.

Jacob Markstrom looks like he'll have to wait a little longer to be Florida's number one goaltender. Tim Thomas was signed to a one-year deal on Thursday and the veteran keeper will presumably be the Panthers' starter this year. "Lessons learned," GM Dale Tallon said of Markstrom. "He's a good young goalie. We're not giving up on him at all. This is good for everybody involved. ... [Thomas] is a great student of the game and it will rub off on everybody." Thomas could mentor Markstrom this year or the Panthers could choose to send him to the minors for more playing time.

Jacob Markstrom isn't ready to concede Florida's starting goaltender job even though the Panthers have added veteran Tim Thomas to their training camp roster. "This is the best league in the world, and it's not supposed to be easy," Markstrom said. "It will be a fun experience. I'm excited. Competition is part of the game. I still want to play most of the games. My goals haven't changed." Thomas views himself as his biggest competition and he believes that he can coexist with Markstrom if he ends up signing a contract with the team.

Jacob Markstrom is in and Jose Theodore is out as the Florida Panthers' starting goalie in the coming season. Markstrom, 23, is being handed the starting job with the Panthers, who have chosen not to not re-sign veteran Jose Theodore and keeping Scott Clemmensen as veteran insurance. [Jacob is] by no means the complete goaltender we hope he will be someday," assistant general manager Mike Santos said. "But, again, he's young.'' Markstrom allowed 68 goals in 23 games last season for a 3.22 goals-against average that resulted in an 8-14-1 record. During the final month of the season, when the Panthers were playing a number of young players on a nightly basis, he gave up six goals in a game twice, five once and four twice. "We were forced into that situation last year because of the injury [to Theodore's groin]," Santos said. "[Jacob] was thrown into a tough situation. Given the time he came up and all the injuries we had in the short season, I think it was difficult to expect him to come in and play to the best of his abilities."

Jacob Markstrom has agreed to a two-year contract with the Florida Panthers. The first season of Markstrom's contract will be two-ways, but it will turn into a one-way deal in 2014-15. Markstrom struggled in 2013 with a 3.22 GAA and .901 save percentage in 23 starts, but the Panthers are hoping that he'll develop into a starting goaltender.
