Antero Niittymaki has been hired as a scout for the Philadelphia Flyers.
"You don't need to spend much time with Antero to get a feel for his knowledge of all aspects of the game, and what it takes to play at the highest level," Philadelphia GM Paul Holmgren said. Niittymaki was drafted by the Flyers in 1998 and he skated in 234 career NHL contests. He's expected to work primarily in Europe and look at European goaltending options.

Antero Niittymaki signed a one-year contract with TPS Turku on Monday to play in Finland.
His battle with chronic hip injuries had him contemplating retirement, but after speaking with doctors and changing up his conditioning process he decided to continue playing. Niittymaki's last appearance in the NHL came during the 2010-11 season with San Jose when he appeared in 24 contests and he was limited to just 13 games in the AHL last year. It's good to see that he landed on his feet somewhere.

Antero Niittymaki has cleared waivers and so he remains with the San Jose Sharks.
"I know they've been working hard to find a place for me to play," Niittymaki said. "It's probably not as easy as it sounds because I've been out with the (hip) surgery and I've only played games in the minors." The Sharks have in fact been seeking a deal for Niittymaki, but they haven't had any luck yet.

Antero Niittymaki's second conditioning stint is being viewed as a showcase for other teams to see that he can play following off-season hip surgery.
He sat as the team's third goaltender after returning from his previous three-game conditioning stint on Dec. 23. He didn't play any matches or dress as the backup while with San Jose.

Antero Niittymaki is still waiting for his opportunity to serve as the Sharks' starter or backup goaltender in a game.
San Jose has played in six games since Niittymaki finished his conditioning stint on December 23rd. When asked if he was frustrated, Niittymaki didn't see the point of denying it. "Obviously, yeah. What can I say? Obviously, I want to play, but it doesn't look like I'm going to play any time soon," Niittymaki said. He hasn't been contacted about the possibility of being traded, but based on the Sharks actions so far, they're probably interested in parting ways with him. The Sharks are currently carrying three goaltenders, but Niittymaki or Thomas Greiss would have to be put on waivers before either one could be demoted.

Antero Niittymaki has not dressed for a game since his recall on December 23.
The Sharks are using Antti Niemi as their starter with Thomas Greiss as the backup and leaving Niittymaki in the press box. They will not drop a goalie at this time as whoever is dropped will have to go through waivers and will definitely be picked up somewhere, so Niittymaki continues to watch from the press box.
