Speaking late Sunday night, coach Gary Kubiak said he's sticking with Matt Schaub as his starter.
Schaub set an NFL record in the Week 5 loss to the Niners, throwing a pick-six for the fourth consecutive game. He now has at least one interception in each game this year (nine on the season), the Texans have dropped three straight games and he was mercifully removed in favor of T.J. Yates in the fourth quarter Sunday night. The key for Schaub will be to return to his preferred game manager role, using the run game to set up easy play-action passes. Don't be surprised if he gets back on track in a Week 6 home game against the lowly Rams.

Matt Schaub was benched in the fourth quarter of Sunday night's loss to the 49ers in favor of T.J. Yates.
Schaub completed 19-of-35 passes for 173 yards and three more interceptions, including a pick-six for the fourth consecutive game. He was downright terrible and can't complete any out-breaking routes. Schaub threw the pick-six on his first throw of the night to Tarell Brown. Brown later got him again, as did DL Tony Jerod-Eddie. Schaub has thrown an interception in eight straight games, including last year's playoffs. He's tossed 13 interceptions in total over that span. Schaub will likely start next week against the Rams, but that's not certain.

A source tells ProFootballTalk that the Texans can get out of Matt Schaub's contract relatively cheaply following this season.
Schaub has thrown a pick-six in three straight games, leading to a 2-2 record. Fans are burning his jersey outside the stadium. So even though the Texans signed Schaub to a five-year, $66 million contract a year ago, the talk about going in a new direction is getting louder. If the Texans designate Schaub as a post-June 1 cut following this season, the 2014 cap hit would be $3.5 million. In 2015, $7 million in dead money would apply. But the Texans would save his $10 million 2014 base salary and another $1 million in bonuses. Regardless, we wouldn't expect the Texans to bail on Schaub so quickly -- he's by far their best option and has a track record as a fine game manager.

Matt Schaub completed 26-of-48 passes for 298 yards, three touchdowns, and two interceptions in Sunday's Week 2 overtime win against Tennessee.
The Titans seemed to be in the backfield much of the day, though Schaub was sacked just twice. Schaub again peppered Andre Johnson with targets early and often before looking for his tight ends once in the red zone. Five of Schaub's six touchdowns through two games have gone to tight ends. One of Schaub's interceptions nearly cost the Texans the game. On a third down late in the fourth quarter, Schaub and DeAndre Hopkins weren't on the same page. Schaub threw the ball right to Alterraun Verner for an easy pick-six that put the Titans up 24-16. Houston got it to overtime and Schaub found Hopkins for the game-winning three-yard score. Schaub is a weekly low-end QB2.

Matt Schaub completed 34-of-45 passes for 346 yards, three touchdowns, and one interception in the Texans' Week 1, 31-28 win over the Chargers on Monday night.
The Texans were down 28-7 early in the third quarter, but they rattled off 24 unanswered points to win on a last-second, 41-yard field goal by Randy Bullock. Schaub opened the night with an interception on the first play from scrimmage. He overcame it and methodically worked the Texans down the field all night, excelling in play-action. Schaub found Andre Johnson a dozen times and relied on him heavily on third downs. Schaub's three scores went to tight ends Owen Daniels (2) and Garrett Graham (1). The Texans open their divisional schedule with their home opener against the Titans in Week 2.

Matt Schaub completed 15-of-26 throws for 213 yards in the Texans' third preseason game Sunday against the Saints.
Schaub confirmed his "rapport" with Andre Johnson is as on point as ever, as the duo hooked up seven times for 131 yards. Through three preseason contests, Schaub is 28-of-42 (66.7 percent) for 339 yards (8.07 YPA), one touchdowns, and no turnovers. Schaub is a low-ceiling QB2 pick in fantasy drafts.

Texans GM Rick Smith admitted Wednesday that Matt Schaub needs to play better in big games this season.
"He understands that. He knows that," Smith said. "And he does have to play better in those situations for us to take our team to the next level." Smith also expressed confidence in Schaub's overall play, saying he "has the ability to take on even more responsibilities." Schaub had the look of a player who peaked last season, so putting more on his plate might not be the Texans' best strategy.

Pro Football Weekly "hears" that Matt Schaub may have played with an undisclosed injury in 2012.
Schaub didn't even appear on the injury report last season, but it's at least one possible explanation for his epic collapse down the stretch, as he threw for just four touchdowns over his final six games and was noticeably ineffective in the Divisional Round loss to the Patriots. Schaub is due $7.25 million next season and will be back under center with the Texans. None of his base salaries are guaranteed beyond 2013.
