A source tells ProFootballTalk that the Texans can get out of Matt Schaub's contract relatively cheaply following this season.
Schaub has thrown a pick-six in three straight games, leading to a 2-2 record. Fans are burning his jersey outside the stadium. So even though the Texans signed Schaub to a five-year, $66 million contract a year ago, the talk about going in a new direction is getting louder. If the Texans designate Schaub as a post-June 1 cut following this season, the 2014 cap hit would be $3.5 million. In 2015, $7 million in dead money would apply. But the Texans would save his $10 million 2014 base salary and another $1 million in bonuses. Regardless, we wouldn't expect the Texans to bail on Schaub so quickly -- he's by far their best option and has a track record as a fine game manager.
It's stupid to complain about Shaub when the Cardinals and Chiefs pay 12mils for their dud QBs. Schuab is not Manning or Brady but you are not breaking the bank for him either. Poor game management and a couple of bad plays but the coach should have stick to the running game.
"The year before Romo was drafted" Bill Parcel once told a reporter when ask why he didn't have a better QB. Bill ask the reporter where can he go to shop for one "mid season." True fans of football knows that to have a chance at landing a good QB is luck and a very bad season, combined. It is far in between that you would see cases like Atlanta trading Farve to Green Bay for a second round or San Diego letting Breese drop unto the Saints lap or Manning being release to Denver.
