Releasing Matt Schaub this offseason would save the Texans $4 million in cap space.
It would also take the Texans off the hook for Schaub's $10 million base salary and $1 million in scheduled per-game roster bonuses. It's a no-brainer move for Houston after Schaub's Delhommian 2013 campaign. The Texans are likely to use their first-round draft pick to select their 2014 starting quarterback.

Matt Schaub completed 18-of-37 throws for 176 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions in the Texans' Week 16 loss to the Broncos.
Schaub "only" took three sacks, but spent much of the game backpedaling and throwing high or wide of his intended targets. He clearly wasn't the spark the Texans needed to pull a Week 16 upset. It wouldn't be surprising if the Texans turned to T.J. Yates in Week 17 against the Titans, assuming Case Keenum (finger) isn't cleared. Schaub could easily be done in a Houston uniform.

Matt Schaub will make the start in Sunday's Week 16 game against the Broncos.
Case Keenum sprained his right (throwing) thumb against the Colts last week and has been ruled out. Schaub can't play any worse that Keenum has been playing, but we wouldn't expect him to be much better. The Broncos will likely blow the Texans out, leaving plenty of garbage-time throws for Schaub. He's not a fantasy option, but we wouldn't downgrade Andre Johnson at all.

Coach Gary Kubiak called Matt Schaub an "unbelievable pro" after Thursday night's loss and said the team will consider starting him the rest of the season.
Schaub came on in relief of an ineffective Case Keenum midway through the third quarter and led the team on a seven-play, 76-yard touchdown drive. Things took a turn for the worst after that. Schaub looked like the Schaub we've seen all season; he held onto the ball too long and threw a game-sealing interception into quadruple coverage. Keenum has tossed an interception in four consecutive games and has taken 15 sacks in seven starts. The offense has stalled quite a bit under his lead. Kubiak could make an announcement Friday.

On in relief of an ineffective Case Keenum in Houston's Week 14 loss to the Jaguars, Matt Schaub completed 17-of-29 passes for 198 yards, one touchdown and one interception.
Schaub provided an immediate spark upon his insertion midway through the third quarter, leading the Texans on a seven-play, 76-yard touchdown drive. It was all downhill after that, however, as Schaub grew increasingly antsy and indecisive. Schaub threw more than one pass across his body, while continually rolling out at the first sign of pressure. He held onto the ball for far too long. It led to some dangerous throws, culminating with what was essentially a game-sealing pick into quadruple coverage with 2:08 remaining. Schaub got one last chance with 0:25 remaining, but took an 18-yard sack. Schaub was better than Keenum - he could at least recognize the blitz - but not by much. The 2-11 Texans could go either way for Week 15 against the Colts.

Coming on in relief of Case Keenum, Matt Schaub completed 12-of-25 passes for 155 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions in Sunday's 28-23 Week 11 loss to the Raiders.
With the Texans down 28-17 near the end of the third quarter, Schaub surprisingly got the call. Predictably, he did little to spark the team. Showing the red-zone woes that have plagued him for so long, the game ended on a goal-line stand by the Raiders. Afterward, Schaub and Andre Johnson were spotted in the midst of a heated exchange. It's unclear who the Texans will start at quarterback the dreamy Week 12 home matchup with the Jaguars.

Matt Schaub is healthy enough to play, but will back up Case Keenum in Week 9.
A report that Schaub's ankle ligaments were torn was leaked so the veteran could save some face. The truth is that he has a mildly sprained ankle, but the Texans would prefer to roll with undrafted rookie Case Keenum. It speaks volumes about Schaub's standing with the organization and in the league. He's 150-of-233 for 1,552 yards with eight touchdowns and nine interceptions this season. Schaub may never play another snap for the Texans if Keenum sustains health and moves the chains.

Sources tell NFL Network that Matt Schaub has torn ligaments in his ankle.
Essentially, an ankle sprain consists of torn ligaments. Perhaps we're being conspiracy theorists, but leaking this injury to sound bad could be a case of the Texans wanting to get another look at Case Keenum. The undrafted rookie was extremely impressive prior to the bye, completing 15-of-25 passes for 271 yards, one touchdown and one turnover in a brutal spot at Kansas City. The source tells the NFL Network that Schaub will attempt to play through his injury, but may not be "right" all season.

Speaking Monday, Texans coach Gary Kubiak called Matt Schaub his "starting quarterback," but admitted he would "evaluate (the) position" during the team's Week 8 bye.
Kubiak left himself plenty of wiggle room to go with Case Keenum against the Colts in Week 9. With Schaub's (foot/ankle) health still up in the air, it's possible Kubiak will have a convenient alibi if he decides to give Keenum another week. With the Texans sitting at 2-5, we're guessing Keenum gets another start after holding his own against the Chiefs.
