Wei-Yin Chen pitched two scoreless innings Saturday against the Rays in his spring debut. Chen likely would have been the starter for Taiwan in Saturday's WBC opener, but he opted to stay with the Orioles, giving Chien-Ming Wang the assignment. He and Jason Hammel are the two pitchers guaranteed spots in Baltimore's rotation.

Wei-Yin Chen intends to build upon his strong 2012 rookie season and strives to pitch at least 200 innings during 2013. Chen tossed 192 2/3 innings in 2012, but struggled down the stretch and appeared to tire due to the heavy workload. He devoted himself to an offseason training program, and says that he feels "noticeably stronger" through his first few bullpen sessions. If he can improve upon last season's numbers, the 27-year-old lefty looks like a tremendous value in the later rounds of fantasy drafts.

Wei-Yin Chen is leaning toward not pitching for Taiwan in the World Baseball Classic. It surely will make the Orioles happy. Chen threw 199 innings this year between the regular season and playoffs after averaging just 157 frames per year in Japan. Though he pitched well in his lone playoff start, the lefty seemed to tire down the stretch, so the added workload wouldn't have been desirable.

Wei-Yin Chen's first ever postseason start was a good one, as he gave up two runs -- one earned -- over 6 1/3 frames in Monday's 3-2 ALDS win over the Yankees. The southpaw permitted eight hits, walked one and struck out a trio of Yankees batters. The first run scored off Chen (which was unearned) wouldn't have happened if not for an acrobatic slide from Ichiro Suzuki after the throw beat him to the plate by plenty. Chen was up-and-down in September, but he came up big for the O's in this one in what was essentially a must-win game. He'll get another playoff start only if Baltimore advances.

Orioles manager Buck Showalter announced on Saturday afternoon that Wei-Yin Chen will be his starter for Game 2 of the ALDS against the Yankees. Miguel Gonzalez will then start Game 3 in New York. Chen went 12-11 with a 4.02 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 154/57 K/BB ratio over 192 2/3 innings in a strong rookie season.

Wei-Yin Chen gave up four runs -- one earned -- over 6 2/3 innings in Monday's loss to the Rays. Chen was cruising along pretty well until the seventh, when a Manny Machado error opened the gates to a three-run inning. Though he was up and down in the second half, Chen finishes the year at 12-11 with a 4.02 ERA and 1.26 WHIP, numbers that the Orioles are surely happy about.

Wei-Yin Chen was knocked around by the Blue Jays Monday, surrendering five runs on nine hits and a walk over five innings. It could have been worse, as Chen exited in the sixth with runners on first and third with no outs, but Jake Arrieta bailed him out by striking out the next three batters. Chen has been a little hit-or-miss in the second half, though he had pitched pretty well in four of five starts coming into tonight. He'll shoot for better results this weekend against the Red Sox.

Wei-Yin Chen allowed just two runs on six hits over 5 1/3 innings Tuesday night against the Mariners. Chen struck out a pair and issued two free passes. All of the Seattle runs came via Miguel Olivo's two-run shot in the fourth inning. Chen has a 5.52 ERA and 1.40 WHIP over his last four starts, perhaps showing signs of fatigue. He'll next face the Blue Jays at home on Monday.

Wei-Yin Chen yielded two runs and eight hits in 7 1/3 innings Thursday in a no-decision against the Rays. Chen struck out seven and walked one. It was a nice rebound performance from him after back-to-back loss to the Yankees to begin the month.
