Souza was placed on the 60-day DL on Wednesday, 620 WDAE's Steve Carney reports.
EDGE Analysis
The move clears a spot for Juniel Querecuto on the 40-man roster. Souza underwent hip surgery Wednesday and had already been ruled out for the season. The hope is that he will be fully recovered for the start of spring training.

Souza (hip) will have his season-ending surgery performed Wednesday in Nashville, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
EDGE Analysis
The 27-year-old outfielder's left hip procedure will be performed by Dr. Thomas Byrd. The ongoing discomfort curtailed what was Souza's best month of the season to date, as he had tallied a .327 average and .984 OBP in September. However, after discussions with the team, surgery was deemed to be the most prudent option, with an eye of having him ready for full participation in spring training in 2017. "(Souza) could have played through it," Cash said, "but at our recommendation and him thinking about it, let's be smart and get in front of this as quick as possible so he can come in to spring training very healthy."

EDGE Analysis
Souza hadn't been sidelined due to the hip issue until a few days ago, but it seems that the issue is more serious than it initially seemed. The 27-year-old will finish the season with a .274 batting average, 17 home runs, and 49 RBI as he moves his focus to recovering for 2017.

Souza's Monday exam in Nashville for his bothersome left hip could reveal a need for season-ending surgery, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. "I don't know what I'm going to hear,'' Souza said. "We're trying to figure out what the timetable is , if there is a need for some type procedure, on when to get it, whether to wait, whether to get it now or not get it at all.''
EDGE Analysis
The 27-year-old has been bothered since June by what has been deemed as pinching caused by irregular bone growth and has missed a total of 17 games as a result of the ailment. Souza will be examined by Dr. Thomas Byrd, who was the initial specialist to look at his injury back in June. If surgery is deemed necessary, Souza could potentially opt for the procedure this week in order to get a jump on his recovery before the offseason even begins.

Souza's 3-for-4 performance in Thursday's win over the Orioles, which included a third-inning RBI double, was his third multi-hit effort of September, and he's now slashing .317/.404/.634 over 41 at-bats during the month.
EDGE Analysis
It's the 27-year-old's best month at the plate of the season by a considerable margin, although he continues to struggle to make contact on a consistent basis. Nevertheless, Souza is now 13-for-41 with a double, four round-trippers, six RBI, six walks and nine runs in September, with the homer total already equaling his second best monthly figure in that category in 2016. Souza also has career highs overall in doubles (17), homers (17), RBI (49), batting average (.243) and slugging percentage (.411), but has notably whiffed a whopping 158 times over 419 at-bats. However, his late-season surge, which has coincided with a much better offensive performance by the Rays overall, may give him some much-needed momentum and confidence heading into the offseason.

EDGE Analysis
Souza continued his recent power surge, hitting his fourth homer in his last seven games, bringing his season total to 17. He also followed up his first two-walk performance of the season Monday with three walks Tuesday, some welcome patience for one of the league's most strikeout-prone hitters. Souza is hitting .239/.298/.407 with 156 strikeouts on the year, seventh most in all of baseball.

He teamed with Logan Morrison for a back-to-back homer barrage against Michael Pineda in the fourth, with Souza's blast coming on the back end. He followed up with a sixth-inning single that brought home Logan Morrison, giving the 27-year-old five hits over his first eight at-bats of the series against the Yankees. Souza went 3-for-4 with a pair of solo homers in Thursday's 5-4 loss to the Yankees.
EDGE Analysis
Souza and Kevin Kiermaier provided all of Tampa Bay's offense with a pair of long balls apiece. The right fielder had driven in just one run since Aug. 21, but he exceeded that total in this game alone. He's one homer shy of last season's career high in the same number of games.
