Souza's 3-for-4 performance in Thursday's win over the Orioles, which included a third-inning RBI double, was his third multi-hit effort of September, and he's now slashing .317/.404/.634 over 41 at-bats during the month.
EDGE Analysis
It's the 27-year-old's best month at the plate of the season by a considerable margin, although he continues to struggle to make contact on a consistent basis. Nevertheless, Souza is now 13-for-41 with a double, four round-trippers, six RBI, six walks and nine runs in September, with the homer total already equaling his second best monthly figure in that category in 2016. Souza also has career highs overall in doubles (17), homers (17), RBI (49), batting average (.243) and slugging percentage (.411), but has notably whiffed a whopping 158 times over 419 at-bats. However, his late-season surge, which has coincided with a much better offensive performance by the Rays overall, may give him some much-needed momentum and confidence heading into the offseason.
