Souza (hip) will begin a rehab assignment later in the week, freelance Rays writer Roger Mooney reports.
EDGE Analysis
Souza has hit in the cage each of the last two days and said his hip is feeling better. He's scheduled to do some running Monday, after which he'll be evaluated and a clearer rehab timetable may be released. Regardless, barring a setback, Souza could be back with the Rays as early as the upcoming weekend.

Souza (hip) has been hitting in the cage recently and is slated to take batting practice Monday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
EDGE Analysis
The 27-year-old slugger went on the DL on June 15, but has steadily progressed throughout his rehab process. He received a cortisone injection and a postive evaluation from Nashville-based specialist Dr. J.W. Thomas Byrd on June 20, and has been handling the bat in the cage without issues. Considering the current state of the Rays offense, Souza's return can't come soon enough for a team desperate for runs.

Souza (hip) received a cortisone shot and good report from an MRI exam during a Monday visit to Nashville-based specialist Dr. J.W. Thomas Byrd, the Tampa Bay Times reports.
EDGE Analysis
The power-hitting outfielder, who's eligible to come off the DL on June 30, seems to be progressing through the recovery process without setbacks. Souza was slashing .255/.315/.443 with 10 homers and 25 RBI before the injury, while also contributing a trio of stolen bases. With the Rays in need of all the offense they can get, the positive report certainly was pleasing to the ears of Souza's boss. "I think the doctor felt really good about the way the hip looked," manager Kevin Cash said. "So we anticipate Souza having a pretty quick recovery."

Souza will receive a cortisone injection in his hip and he hopes to return to the Rays after the minimum 15 days on the DL, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
EDGE Analysis
Souza landed on the DL on Thursday due to a hip injury, but the hope is that a cortisone shot plus rest will have him back once he's eligible to return at the beginning of July. Mikie Mahtook and Jaff Decker figure to share time in right field until Souza returns.

Souza is slashing just .179/.233/.357 over his first 28 at-bats of June, despite a multi-hit outing in Wednesday's 6-3 victory over the D-backs.
EDGE Analysis
The 27-year-old's performance is trending downward once again in June, after he saw a slight dip in offensive production in May compared to his April numbers. Souza managed to get on base twice Wednesday, but came in to the game in a 3-for-23 slump over his first six games of the new month. He's also homered just twice since May 20, although his latest round-tripper did come just four games ago versus the Twins. One of the predominant factors in his struggles is his inability to make consistent contact, as Souza has fanned at least once in 17 straight games, and sports atrocious 35.9 percent strikeout and 61 percent contact rates on the season.
