Mets prospect lefty Steven Matz struck out four batters over seven innings for Double-A Binghamton on Wednesday, scattering two hits and one walk.
The two hits were a second inning home run by Sean Coyle and a fourth inning double by Blake Swihart. Matz has been dominant during his six starts in the Double-A Eastern League, holding the league to a .235/.274/.338 with an 8.3 K/9. He primarily relies on a mid-90s fastball with heavy sink and needs significant improvement on his secondary pitches, but his performance at a higher level has been very encouraging.

Mets left-handed pitching prospect Steven Matz struggled in his Double-A debut on Saturday, allowing seven hits, two walks, and five runs over 5 2/3 innings.
The 23-year old Matz dominated hitters in the Florida State League, holding them to a combined .255/.322/.313 line over 12 starts. He struggled against a lineup that included rehabbing big leaguer Nolan Reimold (0-for-1, 2 walks, strikeout) and prospect Christian Walker (3-for-3, single, double, homer). Matz's goal for his time in Double-A will be to develop more consistent secondary pitches or become a left-handed reliever.

Mets left-handed pitching prospect Steven Matz struck out six in six innings, allowing six hits, one walk, and two runs for High-A St. Lucie on Monday.
Matz uses a mid-90s fastball with heavy sink as his main weapon, pairing it with an inconsistent change-up and curve ball to dominate hitters. He missed nearly two full seasons due to complications coming back from Tommy John surgery, but has dominated the low minors over the past two seasons. The 23-year old Matz could be promoted to Double-A Binghamton soon, where he would be forced to rely on his fastball less and use his secondary pitches more. The Mets will continue to develop him as a starter, but his lack of consistent secondary pitches could turn him into a power lefty who comes out of the bullpen.

After overcoming injuries in the early part of his pro career, Matz posted a 2.62 ERA and 121/38 K/BB ratio over 106 1/3 innings last season with Class A Savannah. The 22-year-old is starting to gain momentum in prospect circles.
