Matz will return to the rotation Saturday in Miami, Adam Rubin of ESPN New York reports.
EDGE Analysis
Matz made his final rehab start Monday, and he's officially been activated from the disabled list. He'll take the spot of Noah Syndergaard, who was initially scheduled to pitch Saturday, enabling Syndergaard skip a turn and gain extra rest. Following that start, the Mets will finish out the season with a six-man rotation featuring Mats, Syndergaard, Matt Harvey, Jacob deGrom, Jon Niese and Bartolo Colon.

Matz (lat), who made his final rehab start Monday, was activated and promoted following the Mets' game that evening, Adam Rubin of ESPN New York reports.
EDGE Analysis
Matz allowed one hit and two walks while striking out four in tossing 78 pitches and 5.1 scoreless innings Monday. In his four rehab outings, Matz gave two runs and nine hits in 15 innings, striking out 13 batters. Matz, who will not be used as a reliever by the Mets in September, could start September 5 or 6 as the team goes to a six-man rotation.

Matz (lat) will not be used as a reliever by the Mets in September, Matt Ehalt of The Bergen Record reports.
EDGE Analysis
Mets manager Terry Collins made the announcement while speaking to reporters Sunday morning, but he did not elaborate as to whether the team will go to a six-man rotation, or simply elect to bump Bartolo Colon from the mix as a starter. Given that Matz was being stretched out during his rehab assignment, this announcement is hardly surprising.

Matz (side) is schedule to throw 60 pitches in a rehab start with Double-A Birmingham on Wednesday, so it's possible he'll require an extra one, ESPN New York reports.
EDGE Analysis
Matz should rejoin the rotation when healthy, but it's a bit unclear at this point when that will be. When he does return, the Mets may decide to employ a six-man rotation throughout the month of September to save their young arms some stress.

New York Mets pitcher Steven Matz will make his second rehab start Thursday for High-A St. Lucie while recovering from a strained lat muscle, according to New York Newsday. Matz has been progressing toward a return after being placed on the disabled list in early July, as he threw one inning and gave up a run in his first appearance since the injury Saturday. Mets general manager Sandy Alderson said he expects Matz to return to the big club before the end of the season. "We'd like to get Steven Matz back on or around the first of September," Alderson told NJ.com earlier this month. "Somewhere in that range. If that happens then it's possible to go back to a six-man rotation. So there's some other things where we may end up with a spot start or two in August so there are some things that we can do that will help manage those innings."

New York Mets pitcher Steven Matz is expected to throw a bullpen session next week as he recovers from a lat injury, according to ESPN New York. Matz went on the disabled list in early July as a result of the injury, but manger Terry Collins said he was happy with Matz's progress after playing catch from 60 feet Monday. "Very positive, very positive," Collins told New York Newsday. "No problems. I saw him the other day and he felt great. He couldn't wait to get back out and start playing catch, which he did today. So that's a good step." Matz, who allowed two runs over 13.2 innings over his first two major league starts before sustaining the injury, does not have a timetable for return. The Mets are in first place in the National League East with a 58-50 record.

Matz (lat) was placed on the 15-day DL on Friday, retroactive to July 6. The Mets held a press conference Friday, during which Matz said that he believes his injury is "just a minor thing." However, the official diagnosis is a partially torn left lat muscle, and the team is reportedly looking at three weeks as an absolute best-case scenario for his return. Matz was treated with a platelet-rich plasma injection after the tear was discovered.
