Boyd took another step toward securing the No. 5 spot in the rotation with a strong spring training performance Tuesday, MLive.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
Boyd scattered three hits across five innings while striking out five. Boyd has seemingly grown his lead for the No. 5 spot over veterans Anibal Sanchez and Mike Pelfrey, who have both struggled this spring. "Nothing's guaranteed," Boyd said. "I've just got to keep working hard, and let someone else make that decision." Boyd certainly has a lot more upside than Sanchez or Pelfrey.

Boyd may be close to cementing the No. 5 spot in the Tigers rotation after allowing one run on three hits while striking out four over three innings of Grapefruit League work Thursday, Anthony Fenech of the Detroit Free Press reports.
EDGE Analysis
The southpaw has a 6.75 ERA over 6.2 spring grames but has struck out seven without a walk, which stakes a good case for him ahead of Anibal Sanchez and Mike Pelfrey. AL-only fantasy players could gain a productive asset in taking Boyd for the back end of their rotation.

Boyd went two scoreless innings in his spring training debut, giving up two hits and striking out two.
EDGE Analysis
Boyd, who appears to have the inside track on the No. 5 spot in the rotation, threw 32 pitches, 23 for strikes. A strong spring would help Boyd hold off the likes of Anibal Sanchez and Mike Pelfrey for that last rotation spot.

Boyd appears to be the early leader for the team's No. 5 starter job, but he'll have to fend off some veteran challengers in spring training, The Detroit News reports.
EDGE Analysis
Boyd had an up-and-down 2016 season, which isn't uncommon for young pitchers, and finished with a 6-5 record to go along with a 4.53 ERA. But the Tigers like how he finished the year, and he seems to have the early edge on veterans Anibal Sanchez and Mike Pelfrey to start the year in the rotation. All three figure to get opportunities to start in spring training.

Boyd was knocked out of Sunday's game against the Royals without retiring a batter. He faced five batters and gave up two singles, a double, a triple and a home run, and was charged with four runs on five hits.
EDGE Analysis
Boyd would love to hit rewind and start Sunday all over again. It was a far cry from his mastery five days ago when he allowed just a single run on three hits over eight innings, striking out seven and walking just one.

Boyd (6-4) pitched eight fantastic innings, limiting the Twins to one run on three hits and one walk while striking out seven in Tuesday's victory.
EDGE Analysis
Boyd matched his career-high strikeout total Tuesday en route to his first win his since Aug. 24. The southpaw threw 68 percent of his pitches for strikes, inducing a large amount of swings and misses (13), while lowering his ERA to 4.16. It was an encouraging bounce-back effort following one of Boyd's worst starts of the season. The 25-year-old sophomore has allowed three runs or fewer in 11 of his 12 starts since the All-Star break. Boyd will take the hill Monday against Cleveland for his next start.

Boyd (5-4) was crushed for 3.2 innings, allowing seven runs, eight hits and one walk while striking out two in Tuesday's loss to the Twins.
EDGE Analysis
The outing was far and away Boyd's worst since returning from the DL in early July. Before Tuesday, he hadn't allowed more than three runs in an outing since June 18 while posting a 5-1 record over 10 starts in that time. Getting hammered by one of MLB's worst lineups can certainly be discouraging for fantasy owners, but Boyd's second-half performance to date is deserving of at least one free pass. The southpaw will look to rebound when he toes the rubber for his next start Sunday in Cleveland.

Boyd (5-3) allowed another long ball on the road, but overall, he pitched well, allowing two runs on eight hits over seven frames in a loss to the White Sox on Tuesday. He also struck out six and walked one.
EDGE Analysis
Jose Abreu hit a solo homer in the second off Boyd, and that's all Chicago would need, as they went on to win 2-0. Boyd has give up eight home runs in just 43.1 innings away from Comerica Park, which has led to a 4.74 road ERA, but overall, he is 5-3 with a 3.89 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 73 strikeouts in 85.2 innings.

Boyd was officially recalled ahead of Tuesday's start against the White Sox in Chicago.
EDGE Analysis
He was optioned down just a week ago but Boyd was eligible to return to the big club with Triple-A Toledo's season ending Monday. Boyd has turned in respectable numbers in 16 appearances (14 starts) with the Detroit this season but he's had issues with the long ball, especially on the road (5.20 ERA).
