Gant fired three perfect innings in Saturday's 2-2 Grapefruit League tie with the Braves, striking out three.
EDGE Analysis
Gant dominated his former team, needing only 31 pitches 22 of which he threw for strikes, to get through his three frames. The outing served as Gant's longest appearance of spring and was yet another step towards a potential roster spot for the 24-year-old righty, who now has allowed just one earned run on three hits over eight innings, and generated a sparkling 1.13 ERA and 0.38 WHIP. "He's really opening some eyes," said Cardinals bench coach David Bell, who managed in place of an ill Mike Matheny. "I know he's had success in the past, but I think he's really putting himself in position where we're taking a close look at him. Today he was very sharp, located his fastball real well. It was a big day for him."

Gant fired two scoreless innings in Monday's 2-1 extra-inning Grapefruit League loss to the Twins. He also recorded a strikeout.
EDGE Analysis
Gant drew the starting assignment after Trevor Rosenthal was scratched with a back injury and parlayed the opportunity into a strong showing. The former Mets first-round pick had some extra velocity on his fastball, consistently hitting 93-94 mph. Gant also had his curve and changeup working effectively, and appeared to make a strong case with manager Mike Matheny in his bid for the final bullpen spot. "The swings that they were taking against him, where he was putting it, he seems to be placing it well," Matheny said. "He's got a little late life to it. Curveball looks good, too, and he's got a good changeup. But locating that hard heater -- he was down with it for a good part and then when he tried to elevate, he could. I thought he executed well. He did a nice job."

Gant, acquired from the Braves on Dec. 1, will follow starter Luke Weaver in Saturday's Grapefuit League opener against the Marlins, Glenn Sattell of MLB.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
The 24-year-old right-hander has been solid in workouts so far, and brings impressive size (6-foot-5), a three-pitch arsenal, and unique delivery. Gant is likely to receive at least two frames to showcase his skills Saturday and will likely be followed by non-roster invitee Austin Gomber.

Gant, acquired in the Dec. 1 trade that sent Jaime Garcia to the Braves, impressed in his first session against hitters Sunday, Rick Hummel of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. "Gant has a little sneakier stuff than was advertised," said pitching coach Derek Lilliquist.
EDGE Analysis
The 24-year-old right-hander brings a quirky pitching motion, and apparently, a repertoire impressive enough to catch the eye of his new pitching coach in his first up-close look of Gant against hitters. The 6-foot-5 hurler acquitted himself decently over his first 20 major league appearances in 2016, a stint that included seven starts. Gant was only 1-4, but did whiff 49 over 50 innings for the Braves, enduring a near two-month absence due to an oblique injury that knocked him out of the starting rotation. His best chance of breaking camp with the major league club could well be in the bullpen, given the Cardinals' solid starting rotation.

Gant was traded to the Cardinals on Thursday, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports.
EDGE Analysis
The right-hander was a part of a package with pitcher Chris Ellis and infielder Luke Dykstra that brought left-hander Jaime Garcia to Atlanta. Gant shuttled between the big leagues and the minors but failed to post an ERA below 4.00 at either level. His strikeout numbers with the Braves were nice (8.8 K/9), although his poor control and home run woes will likely leave him in a long relief role going forward in his new organization.

Gant will be replaced as the starting pitcher for Wednesday's game against the Mets, David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.
EDGE Analysis
Gant was lit up in his previous start, giving up five runs in just 1.2 innings, and it seems the Braves are going to test another option for this turn of the rotation. Ryan Weber will slot in as the starter Wednesday, although it's unclear if this change will move Gant to the bullpen for the rest of the season or if the 24-year-old will rejoin the rotation during the next turn. Things should become clearer following Wednesday's contest.

Gant (1-4) was knocked out in the second inning Friday after allowing five earned runs on six hits and three walks.
EDGE Analysis
Gant had strung together a respectable series of outings before getting lit up by Washington, which smells another division title coming its direction. He'll need to take some time to restore himself psychologically. If he does he has the control (8.4 BB%) and strikeout ability (9.4 K/9) to be a viable starter to watch next season.

Gant allowed one earned run on four hits and four walks in 4.2 innings Saturday against the Braves while striking out six. He did not factor into the decision.
EDGE Analysis
The rookie Gant has been a respectable starter for the Braves over the past several weeks, though working deep into games has been highly elusive. In only one of his past five starts has he pitched at least five full innings. He is 1-3 with a 4.40 ERA and a 1.42 WHIP on the season.

Gant didn't factor into the decision against the Phillies on Saturday, giving up four runs (three earned) on five hits and a walk over five innings. He struck out six.
EDGE Analysis
Just recalled from the minors to presumably help shore up the bullpen, Gant was solid in his spot start. He fired 113 pitches overall, eliciting 11 swinging strikes in the process, and generally limited the damage. At present, the 24-year-old is scheduled to get another turn in the rotation, which will come next Friday versus the Mets.

Gant will start Saturday's game against the Phillies, Kevin McAlpin of Sports Radio 680 The Fan reports.
EDGE Analysis
Gant was recalled to the majors earlier in the week, and although he was initially expected to serve in more of a bullpen capacity, he'll join the rotation for at least one turn through. He owns a 4.59 ERA in the majors this season, but has been more effective in his time as a starter, working to a 3.38 mark and will draw a favorable matchup against a Phillies team that has scored the fewest runs in all of MLB.
