Gant fired two scoreless innings in Monday's 2-1 extra-inning Grapefruit League loss to the Twins. He also recorded a strikeout.
EDGE Analysis
Gant drew the starting assignment after Trevor Rosenthal was scratched with a back injury and parlayed the opportunity into a strong showing. The former Mets first-round pick had some extra velocity on his fastball, consistently hitting 93-94 mph. Gant also had his curve and changeup working effectively, and appeared to make a strong case with manager Mike Matheny in his bid for the final bullpen spot. "The swings that they were taking against him, where he was putting it, he seems to be placing it well," Matheny said. "He's got a little late life to it. Curveball looks good, too, and he's got a good changeup. But locating that hard heater -- he was down with it for a good part and then when he tried to elevate, he could. I thought he executed well. He did a nice job."
