Mets declined LHP Johan Santana's $25 million option for 2014.
A mere formality. Santana, of course, missed all of 2013 after having surgery to repair a re-tear in the capsule in the front of his left shoulder. He'll receive a $5.5 million buyout instead. The veteran left-hander has resumed throwing and is hoping to be ready for spring training. Someone will take a shot on him with an incentive-laden deal.

Johan Santana (shoulder) has begun a throwing program.
Santana revealed the news himself on Twitter. The details aren't available, but the left-hander says that it's "so far, so good" with his rehab. Mets general manager Sandy Alderson said Monday that the club would consider re-signing Johan Santana for next season.
Santana missed all of 2013 after having surgery to repair a re-tear in the capsule in the front of his left shoulder. The 34-year-old is hoping to be ready for spring training, though, and Alderson is open to it being with the Mets. "I think that's a possibility," Alderson said. "I don't really know what Johan's thinking. We'll talk to him, I'm sure, over the next couple of weeks but I think he wants to pitch. We'll just have to see what the market is for these guys and how much of our resources we want to allocate to somebody coming off injury or somebody you hope was able to pitch for you at a higher level."

Johan Santana (shoulder) hopes to be ready for spring training next year.
Santana is now four months removed from surgery to repair a re-tear in the capsule in the front of his left shoulder. The 34-year-old told his agent, Chris Leible, early on in the process that he "isn't going out like this," and his opinion hasn't changed since. "He feels really good, which was not the case after the first surgery," said Leible. "He hopefully will be able to pick up a baseball when he returns (to his home in Fort Myers later in the summer)." Given questions about his health, Santana will almost certainly have to settle for an incentive-laden contract.

Johan Santana underwent successful surgery Tuesday morning to repair a tear in the capsule in the front of his left shoulder.
Santana needed 19 months to make it back to the majors following his last shoulder surgery, so there's no telling when (or if) he'll pitch again. The Mets still owe him $31 million, including $25.5 million this season and a $5.5 million buyout on his option for 2014.

Mets placed LHP Johan Santana on the 15-day disabled list with a left shoulder injury.
Santana will undergo another major surgery Tuesday on his shoulder and has already been ruled out for the entire 2013 campaign. He may never pitch in the majors again.

Johan Santana (shoulder) is scheduled to undergo surgery Tuesday.
Santana is dealing with a "probable re-tear" of the anterior capsule in his left shoulder and has decided to undergo a second surgery in an attempt to continue his career. The operation will knock him out for all of this year, and the 34-year-old is far from a guarantee to return next season. The Mets hold a $5.5 million buyout in 2014.

Mike Puma of the New York Post was told by a source that Johan Santana (shoulder) is leaning toward surgery and attempting to continue his career.
Santana was diagnosed with a probable re-tear of the anterior capsule in his left shoulder this week. His family has been flown up to New York while he mulls over the next step, but all indications are that he'll go through with the surgery and prepare himself for the long road ahead. "He's not ready to end his career," said the source.

An MRI Wednesday revealed a probable re-tear of the anterior capsule in Johan Santana's left shoulder.
What a bummer. Mets general manager Sandy Alderson said there is a "strong possibility" that Santana will require another surgery. The operation would knock him out for this season, and, given that it took him nearly two years to come back from the surgery the first time, the 34-year-old's career would definitely be in jeopardy.

Mets manager Terry Collins said Saturday that Johan Santana (shoulder) "may take six weeks to get where he wants to be."
Santana has not thrown off a mound in nearly three weeks and will need to double the distance of his current long-toss from 90 to 180 feet before he'll be cleared to climb atop the bump. Obviously, that means he's nowhere near ready to pitch in games. The Mets will use Jeremy Hefner has his rotation replacement.
