Johan Santana (shoulder) is scheduled to throw off a mound again on Wednesday in Mets camp.
Santana did some light throwing from a mound on Sunday and felt fine. He is not expected to begin appearing in Grapefruit League games until sometime next week. It's unclear whether he'll be ready for Opening Day.

Johan Santana (shoulder) did some light tossing from a mound Sunday.
Santana wasn't throwing at full intensity, and the catcher was set up in front of the plate, so it wasn't close to a full bullpen session. Still, it's a notable development after GM Sandy Alderson said Saturday that the left-hander was 10 days away from mound work. Santana insists that he'll be ready to pitch on Opening Day, but it's still up in the air.

Mets GM Sandy Alderson said Johan Santana is still 10 days away from being able to throw off a mound.
It's the next big step for the lefty, who threw from 120 feet on Friday. There's still plenty of time for Santana to be ready by Opening Day, but his availability is anything but a given at this point. The 33-year-old has been plagued by injuries over his career, but the Mets had hopes that he could handle a full workload this year. From that standpoint, Santana's slow start hasn't done much to reassure the team.

Johan Santana (shoulder) threw from a distance of 120 feet on Friday.
Santana still needs to stretch it out to 150 feet and then 180 before returning to the mound, which the Mets hope will take place within the next five to seven days. The veteran left-hander hasn't been ruled out for Opening Day yet, but he can't afford any setbacks.

Mets manager Terry Collins said Monday that left-hander Johan Santana (shoulder) is "making strides."
Santana is being limited right now to flat-ground work, but those sessions have gone swimmingly. "I told him already today: He looked better today than he did five days ago," Collins told reporters. "I think the long-toss program is making strides." Santana is aiming to start on Opening Day against the Padres.

The Mets have pushed Johan Santana's Grapefruit League debut back from March 2 to sometime between March 10-15.
The club insists that nothing is structurally wrong with Santana, but rather it's a move made in order to build up strength and conditioning. Santana is currently long-tossing and doesn't feel any pain, but general manager Sandy Alderson admitted that the left-hander's availability for Opening Day is now in question.

Mets general manager Sandy Alderson said that he team will announce a decision Monday regarding Johan Santana's participation in the World Baseball Classic.
Santana wants to pitch for his native Venezuela in the WBC, but the Mets would prefer that he doesn't participate. It's worth noting that the Mets have veto power in the situation, so it's safe to assume that he'll stay in camp with the team.

Mets general manager Sandy Alderson said Wednesday that the team has veto power over whether Johan Santana will pitch for Venezuela in the World Baseball Classic.
While Alderson didn't come right out and say it, it's clear that the Mets would prefer that he doesn't participate. "It's a complicated situation, just because of his injury and the fact that he did not pitch at the end of last season," said Alderson. "As a result, he has to go through a physical and a review panel. But ultimately he needs our permission to play. And what we're going to do is take a look at it over the next few days."

Johan Santana's first bullpen session of the spring is tentatively scheduled for Sunday.
Santana really struggled after his no-hitter against the Cardinals last season, eventually being shut down due to a combination of fatigue and ankle and back injuries, but he has enjoyed a normal offseason up until this point. This is a big year for the 33-year-old southpaw, as he's entering the final guaranteed year of his six-year, $137.5 million contract. If he bounces back, it wouldn't be surprising to see him on the trade block.
