Manager Bruce Bochy said Monday that the odds lean toward Panik's season being over following last week's setback, Alex Pavlovic of CSN Bay Area reports.
EDGE Analysis
In just his third game back from the DL, Panik aggravated his back injury, and Bochy suggested he'd be surprised if the 24-year-old was able to return to the field in 2015. It's a tough way for Panik's strong sophomore season to end, but he's solidified his spot in the lineup heading into next season. Look for Kelby Tomlinson to continue filling in at the keystone while Panik remains sidelined.

Panik is once again out of the lineup, this time in Sunday's game against the Giants.
EDGE Analysis
Kelby Tomlinson will take over at second base again while Panik misses a third straight game after his back injury flared up Wednesday. Panik could be in line to miss significant time again, considering how long he was originally out due to his back.

Panik (back) remains out of the lineup Saturday against the Giants.
EDGE Analysis
A recurrence of Panik's back injury forced the second baseman from Wednesday's game, and he has yet to receive clearance to return to the starting lineup. Kelby Tomlinson will once again man the keystone in place of Panik, who spent more than a month on the DL with the back issue before returning early this week.

Panik (back) is not in the lineup Friday against the Rockies.
EDGE Analysis
Panik exited Wednesday's contest with a recurrence of his back injury that landed him on the disabled list, and will sit out again Friday with the same issue. Kelby Tomlinson will draw the start at the keystone and bat seventh.

Panik exited Wednesday's game following the sixth inning due to a recurrence of his back injury, Alex Pavlovic of CSN Bay Area reports.
EDGE Analysis
Panik's back is an issue again just three games after he returned to action. It's not clear how long his latest setback will sideline him, but with the Giants nine games out of a playoff spot, the team does not have any incentive to rush him back onto the field.

Panik will start at second base and bat second in his return to the lineup Tuesday.
EDGE Analysis
He did not immediately return to the lineup following his activation from the DL but did make a pinch-hit appearance Monday, smacking a double to center field off Arizona's Daniel Hudson. The 24-year-old will return to the two-hole in his first start since Aug. 1, a spot he occupied on an everyday basis before hitting the shelf.

EDGE Analysis
Panik is out of the lineup, with Kelby Tomlinson still starting at the keystone. While it seems likely Panik will take the majority of the starts at second base moving forward, but Tomlinson could continue to factor into the mix.

Panik (back) was activated from the 15-day disabled list Monday.
EDGE Analysis
Panik will finally rejoin the Giants after an extended stay on the disabled list dating back to early August. His back issue appears behind him for now, but it's always something that has a chance to resurface. Now that he's healthy, it seems likely he will receive most of the starts at second base, but it's possible Kelby Thompson (who's been hot recently) will still get some looks as well.

Panik went 0-for-2 in his first rehab appearance with Triple-A Sacramento on Thursday.
EDGE Analysis
Despite not registering a hit in three innings, Panik made several athletic defensive plays and reported that his back felt fine after the game. He is expected to make two more rehab starts with Triple-A Sacramento before rejoining the Giants. If he is available on the wire, now would be a good time to stash Panik if your team is in need of middle infield help.

San Francisco Giants second baseman Joe Panik was placed on the 15-day disabled list Monday due to lower-back inflammation. Panik was held out of Sunday's game with a recurrence of the stiffness that held him out of two games earlier last week. The 24-year-old was in the midst of a breakout season prior to the injury, hitting .309 with seven home runs, 25 doubles, three steals and just five more strikeouts (42) than walks (37), making up what has been a hugely productive infield with fellow emerging hitters Brandon Belt, Matt Duffy and Brandon Crawford. There has been no timeline offered for Panik's recovery yet, but it remains possible that he might spend the minimum time on the disabled list. Ehire Adrianza is expected to take the majority of duties at second base in Panik's place, but the team also recalled Kelby Tomlinson from Triple-A Fresno to provide extra depth in the infield.
