San Francisco Giants second baseman Joe Panik was placed on the 15-day disabled list Monday due to lower-back inflammation. Panik was held out of Sunday's game with a recurrence of the stiffness that held him out of two games earlier last week. The 24-year-old was in the midst of a breakout season prior to the injury, hitting .309 with seven home runs, 25 doubles, three steals and just five more strikeouts (42) than walks (37), making up what has been a hugely productive infield with fellow emerging hitters Brandon Belt, Matt Duffy and Brandon Crawford. There has been no timeline offered for Panik's recovery yet, but it remains possible that he might spend the minimum time on the disabled list. Ehire Adrianza is expected to take the majority of duties at second base in Panik's place, but the team also recalled Kelby Tomlinson from Triple-A Fresno to provide extra depth in the infield.
