Gerrit Cole (shoulder) made 25 throws from 60 feet off flat ground Monday.
It's the first time he's thrown since his June 3 start against the Padres. Cole was placed on the disabled list Sunday with right shoulder fatigue, but the hope is that he'll only miss two starts. Jeff Locke is filling his spot in the rotation for now.

Pirates placed RHP Gerrit Cole on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to June 4, with right shoulder fatigue.
Cole is expected to miss at least two starts. It doesn't appear that the young right-hander has any structural damage, but the Pirates have decided it would be best to give him some rest. Cole hasn't looked like himself for about a month now, posting a pedestrian 4.01 ERA since the beginning of May. Jeff Locke has assumed his spot in the rotation.

MLB.com's Tom Singer said Gerrit Cole is a candidate for a trip to the disabled list with shoulder fatigue.
Cole was originally scheduled to start on Monday against the Cubs, but the Pirates pushed Charlie Morton back to start in his spot. Cole has been noticeably worse late in outings recently, so shoulder fatigue could be contributing to that. Jeff Locke will be recalled to start for Morton on Sunday, so he would presumably remain in the rotation in Cole's spot if the big right-hander needs a DL stint.

Gerrit Cole tossed 5 2/3 innings of one-run ball in a victory over the Padres on Tuesday.
The big right-hander whiffed six and issued two free passes in his first career start against the Padres, getting yanked after 100 pitches in the sixth after coughing up a Yonder Alonso RBI single. This start continued a disturbing trend of Cole wearing down late in outings, as he entered with a sub .700 OPS allowed between pitches 1-30, but a .937 OPS allowed in pitches 31-45, and a .395 OBP between pitches 51-75. Becoming as dominant in the later innings as in the first three or four is the schism between Cole being an ace and the No. 2 starter he is now. Cole has allowed three earned runs or fewer in 10 of his 12 starts on the season. He improves to 6-3 with a 3.64 ERA and 1.32 WHIP. Cole has another nice matchup next week against the Cubs.

Gerrit Cole held the Dodgers to three runs on six hits over 6 1/3 innings to earn his fifth win of the season in Thursday's 6-3 victory.
He struck out three and walked two. The big right-hander has allowed three earned runs or fewer in nine of his 11 starts on the season. Cole has been consistent, but not dominant -- he hasn't yet held the opposing team off the board in a 2014 start. That dominance should come, as the 23-year-old has ace stuff but sophomore experience. Cole improves to 5-3 with a 3.80 ERA and 1.32 WHIP. He has a spectacular matchup on Tuesday in San Diego.

Gerrit Cole yielded three runs over six innings and struck out eight Sunday as the Pirates beat the Yankees 5-3 to split a doubleheader.
It was a tie game when Cole's day came to an end, but Josh Harrison's homer in the top of the seventh put him back in line for the win. Bryan Morris, Tony Watson and Mark Melancon combined to get the job done from there. While Cole hasn't been dominant, he has been solid and he still probably has a big run left in him. Right now, he's 4-3 with a 3.84 ERA and 53 strikeouts in 58 2/3 innings.

Gerrit Cole allowed three runs on seven hits over 5 2/3 innings in Tuesday's loss to the Brewers.
Cole also walked three while striking out six. The right-hander has now allowed three earned runs or fewer in six of his eight starts on the season, but he's just 3-3 to show for it. He's got a tough test Sunday in an interleague matchup with the Yankees at Yankee Stadium.

Gerrit Cole held the Giants to three runs over eight innings to earn his third win of the season in Wednesday's 4-3 victory.
Cole had a tough time with Brandon Belt, who got to the right-hander with a solo homer in the first and a two-RBI double in the fifth. He was pretty much in control otherwise, allowing seven hits and a walk while recording seven strikeouts. Cole now holds a 3.64 ERA and 39/13 K/BB ratio over 47 innings this season. He'll go up against the Brewers in Milwaukee next.

Gerrit Cole was hit hard in a no-decision against the Blue Jays on Friday, allowing four runs on seven hits in just five innings of work.
On the plus side, he did manage to rack up six strikeouts while walking just one before departing. The big blow against him came on a two-run homer by Colby Rasmus in the fourth inning. The 23-year-old hurler has struggled to find consistency this season, compiling a 3.69 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 32/12 K/BB ratio through his first 39 innings. He'll look to get back on track on Wednesday when he squares off against the Giants at home.

Gerrit Cole tossed seven innings of one-run ball in a tough-luck loss to the Cardinals on Friday.
Cole's only mistake was an RBI double from Matt Holliday in the bottom of the first inning, but his offense couldn't get anything going, so it was enough to put him on the losing side. The young right-hander struck out four and walked three and induced 16 ground balls. While Cole dropped to 2-2 on the year, he holds a solid 3.18 ERA and 26/11 K/BB ratio in 34 innings across five starts this season. He'll face the Blue Jays in an interleague start next week.
