Gerrit Cole (lat) will need a second minor league rehab start after his first one on Monday. Cole has been out since July 5 with right lat soreness. Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said Saturday that he wants the right-hander to get to 100 pitches in the minors before returning to the major league rotation.

Gerrit Cole (lat) is scheduled to make his first minor league rehab start with Triple-A Indianapolis on Monday. Pirates manager Clint Hurdle indicated that he would be limited to 80-85 pitches in the ballgame. If all goes well, he could be cleared to rejoin the Pirates rotation shortly afterwards.

Gerrit Cole (lat) threw 70 pitches in a simulated game Wednesday. Cole was scheduled to throw between 50 and 60, so the fact that he hit 70 may be a sign that he's close ready for a rehab assignment. Cole said afterward that he felt good but recognized that he didn't want to rush too much in his haste to return. He'll almost certainly need a rehab assignment before rejoining the Bucs.

Gerrit Cole (lat) said Friday that his throwing sessions during the All-Star break went well. Cole was slated to throw a 20-25 pitch bullpen session on Thursday. The right-hander won't return on July 20 when first eligible, but it's sounding like he might not be that far off. It's not clear what the next step for Cole is.

Gerrit Cole (lat) will throw a 20-25 pitch bullpen session on Thursday. The Pirates are taking it one step at a time with the young right-hander, as they won't decide what next to do with Cole until after Thursday's side session. We do know that Cole will not return on July 20 when first eligible, but a timetable has yet to be mapped out. He's dealing with tightness in his right lat.

Pirates manager Clint Hurdle revealed on Friday that Gerrit Cole (lat) will not return from the disabled list when first eligible on July 20. Cole is already throwing again, but he's dealt with two shoulder injuries over the last month and the Pirates don't want to rush him back. There's no timetable for his return, but early August seems doable as long as the right-hander doesn't have any setbacks.

Pirates placed RHP Gerrit Cole on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to July 5, with right lat soreness. It's a totally separate injury from the shoulder ailment that sent him to the disabled list last month. Cole has already resumed some light throwing, but the Pirates are expected to proceed more cautiously with him this time around. Brandon Cumpton has taken Cole's spot in the Pirates' rotation.

The Pirates plan to proceed more cautiously with Gerrit Cole (lat) this time than they did the last time he landed on the disabled list. Cole threw three simulated games but didn't go out on a rehab assignment last month, but he'll need a rehab assignment this time around. The good news is that he doesn't need to be shut down at all, as the righty played some light catch Tuesday. "There will be a rehab start involved down the line [this time]," said manager Clint Hurdle. "We want him to understand that when he comes back, we want to give him an opportunity to thrive, not just survive, and pitch instinctively so he can go out and be the Gerrit Cole we've seen in the past. I don't think that's far away."
