Gerrit Cole tossed 5 2/3 innings of one-run ball in a victory over the Padres on Tuesday. The big right-hander whiffed six and issued two free passes in his first career start against the Padres, getting yanked after 100 pitches in the sixth after coughing up a Yonder Alonso RBI single. This start continued a disturbing trend of Cole wearing down late in outings, as he entered with a sub .700 OPS allowed between pitches 1-30, but a .937 OPS allowed in pitches 31-45, and a .395 OBP between pitches 51-75. Becoming as dominant in the later innings as in the first three or four is the schism between Cole being an ace and the No. 2 starter he is now. Cole has allowed three earned runs or fewer in 10 of his 12 starts on the season. He improves to 6-3 with a 3.64 ERA and 1.32 WHIP. Cole has another nice matchup next week against the Cubs.
