Yankees general manager Brian Cashman hasn't ruled out the possibility that Derek Jeter (ankle) could begin the season on the disabled list.
Jeter was scratched from Tuesday's lineup due to mild inflammation in his surgically-repaired left ankle and received an anti-inflammatory injection on Wednesday. It's not a major setback, but the Yankees want him to play a full nine innings and back-to-back games before Opening Day. He could still pull that off, but it all depends on how the ankle responds in the coming days.

Derek Jeter (ankle) is not in the lineup for Wednesday's Grapefruit League game.
He's also not listed among the players expected to take batting practice. It's not unexpected, as Jeter was scratched from Tuesday's lineup with ankle stiffness and was later diagnosed with mild inflammation following X-rays and an MRI. The veteran shortstop likely get a couple of days of rest, but he should be back in action soon.

Derek Jeter has been diagnosed with mild inflammation following an X-ray and MRI on his left ankle.
Jeter was scratched from Tuesday's lineup due to stiffness in his surgically-repaired left ankle, but it was deemed precautionary and the diagnosis confirms that's it shouldn't be a big deal. The veteran shortstop might spend extra time in the DH spot early on the season, but the ankle isn't a long-term concern at this point.

Derek Jeter was scratched from Tuesday's lineup due to left ankle stiffness.
Yes, it's the same ankle Jeter had surgery on in October. The veteran shortstop took batting practice Tuesday, but had trouble loosening up. There's no reason to take any chances, so the Yankees are just playing things safe for now. Consider him day-to-day.

Yankees manager Joe Girardi said Tuesday that Derek Jeter (ankle) could serve as the designated hitter on Opening Day.
Girardi hasn't ruled out the possibility that Jeter will start at shortstop, but it could depend on how his ankle feels. The decision could also be strategic, as the Yankees could use Jeter at DH and Eduardo Nunez at shortstop with Jon Lester expected to pitch for the Red Sox on Opening Day.

Derek Jeter (ankle) played four innings at shortstop on Wednesday and felt fine physically.
It was his first time playing shortstop in a live setting since he broke his ankle in Game 1 of the ALCS against the Tigers. "It was good to be out there again," Jeter said. "Just getting back into game action, seeing things. It's been a while." He went 0-for-2 at the plate with a walk.

Derek Jeter (ankle) will play shortstop and bat leadoff Wednesday.
This will be Jeter's first game action at shortstop since he fractured his ankle during the ALCS against the Tigers. The 38-year-old won't play back-to-back games in the field right away, but the important thing is that he's on track for Opening Day.

Derek Jeter (ankle) will play shortstop Wednesday night for the first time this spring.
That was the plan, but the Yankees wanted to see how Jeter's ankle felt Tuesday morning before making it official. The 38-year-old figures to play four or five innings initially and it may be a little while before he's ready to play the field on back-to-back days, but he's on track to be ready for the Yanks' season opener against the Red Sox on April 1.
