Derek Jeter (ankle) expects to begin a running program in a couple of weeks. Jeter has been working out at the Yankees' spring training complex in Tampa, Florida since late January, fielding grounders and taking batting practice in a cage. He's on track to be fully recovered from his October ankle surgery by the opening of the 2013 regular season.

Derek Jeter (ankle) took swings in the cage and fielded grounders Tuesday in Tampa. Jeter fielded 55 ground balls Monday in his first on-field baseball activities since surgery, but he felt good enough to ramp it up to 72 grounders on Tuesday. While he still has some major hurdles to cross, the hope is that he'll be ready for Opening Day.

Derek Jeter performed on-field baseball activities Monday for the first time since his October ankle surgery. Jeter took swings in a cage and fielded 55 groundballs. The veteran shortstop is currently on track to be fully recovered by the start of the 2013 regular season, but anything can happen between now and April. Keep an eye out for updates throughout spring training.

Derek Jeter (ankle) has been cleared for baseball activity. He won't begin them until later this month, however, which is when he typically does. It's a good sign for Jeter's availability for Opening Day, though it was never really in doubt, anyway. The veteran shortstop underwent surgery for a broken ankle in late October.

Yankees GM Brian Cashman confirmed on Saturday that Derek Jeter has removed his walking boot and has begun workouts at the Yankees' spring training complex in Tampa, Florida. He added that Jeter will be cleared for baseball activities at some point in mid-late January, but won't be doing any running until it gets closer to the start of spring camp. Jeter recently stated that he expects to be in the Opening Day lineup.

Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said Monday that he expects Derek Jeter (ankle) to be ready for Opening Day. Jeter underwent surgery on his fractured left ankle in late October and is now out of a walking boot. Cashman said the veteran shortstop has been walking and running on an underwater treadmill and the ESPN New York report says he was recently seen riding a bicycle near his home in Florida. The 38-year-old isn't expected to be cleared for baseball activities before mid-to-late January, but for now, everything has progressed as hoped. "It's all in the doctors' hands right now," said Cashman. "But he'll be ready on Opening Day."

Derek Jeter (ankle) said Monday afternoon on "The Michael Kay Show," that he expects to be ready for Opening Day. In other words, this isn't much different than what Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said late last month. "I'll be in the walking boot for another few weeks and then I'll be good to go," said Jeter. "It's been a long process. What's it been, six or seven weeks, where I haven't been able to move too much? But it's healing probably just as expected. We still got a long way to go before the season starts but I'll be ready." Jeter, 38, is owed $17 million next season while his contract includes an $8 million player option for 2014.

Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said Tuesday that he expects Derek Jeter (ankle) to be ready for Opening Day. Manager Joe Girardi admitted last week that there was a possibility Jeter wouldn't be recovered from ankle surgery in time for the opener, but the feeling all along is that he should be ready to roll as long as he doesn't have any setbacks. The 38-year-old is coming off a season where he batted .316/.362/.429 with 15 homers.

Yankees manager Joe Girardi has conceded that "there's a little bit of a question" whether or not Derek Jeter (ankle) will be ready for Opening Day. Jeter underwent surgery on his fractured left ankle in late October and was given a 4-5 month rehab timetable. As long as he doesn't have any notable setbacks, he should be OK by the opener, but it's fair to question how fast a 38-year-old coming off major surgery will heal. "I think there's a little bit of a question," Girardi said. "Because of the rehab and you have to get the full strength and maybe you're not able to start doing the things you normally would in January. I mean, it could be (that he's not ready for Opening Day), but I think he'll find a way."

Derek Jeter underwent successful ankle surgery Saturday. Jeter's recovery timetable is listed at four to five months, so any setbacks would put his status for Opening Day in question. The Yankees are optimistic that the injury won't linger into the regular season, and are expected to move forward with backups Eduardo Nunez and Jayson Nix as middle infield depth.
