Mets manager Terry Collins said the best-case scenario would have David Wright (pinkie) returning on Friday. Collins is just being overly optimistic at this point until Wright's X-ray is examined by a hand specialist Wednesday. We'd be surprised if a DL stint isn't needed, and even if it's not, he'll surely miss at least a handful of games with a small fracture in his right pinkie.

An X-ray has revealed a small fracture in David Wright's right pinkie. The good news is that he won't need surgery, but Wright will wear a splint and be sidelined indefinitely. The Mets haven't said if a disabled list stint will be required, but we have to assume it will be. He'll be re-evaluated Wednesday and will resume baseball activities once he can tolerate the pain. The Mets started Ronny Cedeno at the hot corner on Tuesday, and he figures to see plenty of playing time while Wright is sidelined. Justin Turner would also be due for an uptick in at-bats, and the club could call up Zach Lutz.

David Wright went 3-for-5 with a solo homer in Saturday's win over the Braves. Wright's homer went to his old comfort zone in right-center field, but it actually made it over the old Citi Field fence. He now has five hits over his first eight at-bats and looks very comfortable at the plate following his torn abdominal muscle this spring. The 29-year-old appears poised for a solid bounce-back campaign.

David Wright played four innings in his Grapefruit League debut Monday and deemed his return a success. He went 1-for-2 and made a spectacular diving stop of a Rafael Furcal hard grounder. Wright said he would also play Wednesday. "You can do all the conditioning and working out that you want," Wright said. "But, then, playing in a game is different. When you have to get up, get down, get up, get down, trying to prepare for your at-bats the way you do, it's a little different. So I'm sure I'll be a little sore tomorrow." He should be ready for Opening Day.

David Wright (abdomen) is starting at third base and batting third in Monday's Grapefruit League game. It will be Wright's Grapefruit League debut. The 29-year-old third baseman has been taking it easy in Mets camp this spring since suffering a torn abdominal muscle in early March. But as long as he can avoid setbacks from this point forward, he should be fine for Opening Day.

David Wright (abdomen) could make his Grapefruit League debut Monday. Wright participated in another full team workout Sunday and has been taking batting practice since late last week. The third baseman is not yet in danger of missing the start of the regular season.

David Wright (abdomen) could make his Grapefruit League debut Tuesday. Wright participated in a full team workout on Saturday afternoon and has been taking batting practice since late last week. As long as the progress continues, he should be cleared for spring game action on Tuesday. The third baseman is not in danger of missing the start of the regular season.

David Wright (abdominal strain) took batting practice Thursday for the first time since receiving a cortisone shot last week. "I feel about as good as I'd feel, I guess, picking up a bat for the first time in a few weeks," said Wright. "Hopefully it gets better from here result-wise. But just being out there and being able to go through a full day and a full round of batting practice and not feeling anything, that's pretty good." Wright has also begun making full throws across the diamond, but he'll likely need a few more days of workouts before playing in a game. Mets' manager Terry Collins said Tuesday that he hopes Wright will make his spring debut by early next week at the latest, which puts him on pace to be ready for Opening Day.

David Wright (abdominal strain) hit in the cage Wednesday. Wright has ramped up baseball activities after receiving a cortisone shot in New York early last week. He hopes to get out on the field to see live pitching on Thursday. Mets manager Terry Collins hopes to have Wright in the lineup as soon as this weekend, though it's possible his spring debut could be pushed back to early next week. He's cutting it close, but still has enough time to be ready for Opening Day.
