The Diamondbacks and Daniel Hudson are discussing a contract that would avoid salary arbitration, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com is hearing.
Hudson is rehabbing from his second Tommy John surgery that's limited him to just nine starts since the beginning of 2012. The team would like to avoid arbitration with the right-hander, and they've got until Monday to decide whether to offer him arbitration. If the Diamondbacks decline to offer him arbitration Hudson would become a free agent. Either way, the 26-year-old will have to settle for a one-year deal and hope to rebuild his value during the 2014 season.

Daniel Hudson (elbow) is progressing well in his recovery from a second Tommy John surgery, noting that he has regained his full range of motion.
The Diamondbacks have already publicly acknowledged that they would like to bring the arbitration-eligible Hudson back for the 2014 season. He's likely to miss most of the 2014 season as he continues his recovery.

Diamondbacks general manager Kevin Towers said he wants to bring Daniel Hudson back next season.
Hudson will be arbitration eligible for the first time this winter. He hasn't pitched in more than a season-and-a-half, recovering from two Tommy John surgeries; Hudson has been accruing MLB service time on the disabled list. "We've got some time on that," Towers said, in reference to the Dec. 2 contract tender deadline to arbitration-eligible players. "We've tried to come up with creative ways that we can do it. We've got some ideas, some thoughts that we've kind of worked on, but we haven't approached him or his adviser yet. I'd certainly like to keep him here and work something out that works for both sides."

Daniel Hudson left his rehab start Tuesday for Double-A Mobile with elbow stiffness.
Hudson was making his first start outside of three extended spring training outings. He allowed one run on two hits over two innings before exiting. The Diamondbacks had been hoping that Hudson would be available in late June, but the setback is likely to push back his return from the disabled list.

Daniel Hudson (elbow) will be re-evaluated after his second rehab start on June 10 to determine if he's ready to be activated.
"The best-case, earliest scenario with those starts would probably be the middle of June," Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson said. "But we kind of take it (on a progression) I guess." Hudson is on the same schedule as Brandon McCarthy (shoulder), and it's possible he'll be ready for activation first.

Daniel Hudson (elbow) is expected to begin a rehab assignment with Double-A Mobile on Tuesday.
Hudson allowed four runs in six innings Wednesday at extended spring training, hitting 95 mph on the radar gun. When asked if the righty might only need a few starts in the minors, Diamondbacks general manager Kevin Towers said, "We'll see how it goes." The problem for Hudson is that the D'Backs don't currently have room for him in their rotation. Of course, things can change over the next few weeks.

Daniel Hudson (elbow) allowed four runs in six innings Wednesday at extended spring training.
Hudson allowed seven hits and one walk while striking out three. He threw 74 pitches in all, hitting 95 mph with his fastball at one point. The right-hander is on his way back from Tommy John surgery and should join the Arizona starting rotation by the end of June.

Daniel Hudson (elbow) gave up two runs on five hits over four innings in an extended spring training game on Friday.
It's the first time since last year's Tommy John surgery that Hudson has faced hitters wearing a different uniform. The D'Backs says the righty's fastball sat in the 91-93 mph range, which is obviously a good sign. "The light at the end of the tunnel is getting a little bit brighter now," Hudson said. Hudson will appear in another extended spring game next week and doesn't appear far off from a rehab assignment. He could be back as soon as late June if all goes well, though the big club doesn't currently have room for him in the rotation.

Daniel Hudson (elbow) threw 55 pitches over two innings in a live batting practice session on Monday.
"He looked good," Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson said. "He was overthrowing in the first inning but he came back in the second and had much better location. Overall it was good." Hudson will now begin throwing on a regular five-day cycle, mixing in a bullpen session in between each outing as he would do during the regular season. The D'Backs are hoping to get him back just before the All-Star break.
