Chase Headley (calf) has been playing catch and tracking pitches in the batting cage but has yet to resume hitting. Headley suffered a strained right calf during a workout last Saturday and is expected to miss 2-3 weeks. While certainly not ideal, the third baseman should still have time to get ready for Opening Day.

Chase Headley (calf) said Tuesday that he "should have plenty of time" to get ready for Opening Day. The third baseman will be sidelined 2-3 weeks with a right calf strain, but he thinks he needs only 15-20 Cactus League at-bats from each side of the plate in order to get ready for the season. "If I can get 15 to 20 (at-bats) from both sides, that's pretty close to what I need," Headley said. "If it progresses the way that I hope - and I think that it will - then I should be fine. We should have plenty of time. The last thing we want to do, though, is have it become a lingering thing. So even when we think it's ready, we might give it a day or two."

Chase Headley was diagnosed with a Grade 1 strain of his right calf following an MRI. This confirms the initial diagnosis. The early expectation is that Headley will have to miss 2-3 weeks. He'll be cutting it close to be ready for the season, but there's still enough time if he can avoid setbacks.

Chase Headley will likely miss at least two weeks due to a strained right calf. Headley suffered the injury during infield drills, and he was seen on crutches in the team's clubhouse. Even though it sounds bad, Headley didn't seem too concerned. The third baseman received ice treatment Saturday afternoon and will get an MRI Monday. More should be known about his timetable after the team gets the results back.

Chase Headley suffered a strained right calf during workouts on Saturday. There has been no word yet on the severity of the injury, but Headley believes he could be out a couple of weeks. He entered spring training without restrictions after undergoing arthroscopic knee surgery in the offseason, but has had a difficult time remaining on the field during his career.

Chase Headley said Sunday that his surgically-repaired left knee feels good. Headley had arthroscopic surgery on the knee back in October, but he began rehabbing a week after the operation and enters spring training with no limitations. The third baseman is looking to bounce back in 2014 after hitting a disappointing .250/.347/.400 with 13 homers last season.

Padres avoided arbitration with 3B Chase Headley by agreeing to a one-year, $10.525 million contract. Headley was arbitration-eligible for a final time this winter. The third baseman is coming off a terribly disappointing 2013 campaign that saw him bat just .250/.347/.400 with 13 homers. He'll be aiming for a big bounce-back showing in his contract year.

According to Andy Martino of the New York Daily News, the Yankees are prepared to fill their vacancy at third base in-house, and are no longer calling the Padres about Chase Headley. The Bombers reportedly had called pretty regularly checking on the availability of the Padres third sacker, but the Padres seem content to hang onto him for the time being. The Yankees will trust some combination of Scott Sizemore, Kelly Johnson and Eduardo Nunez to handle the bulk of playing time at both second and third base.

Bill Shaikin of the Los Angeles Times reports that the Padres are not expected to trade Chase Headley. There have been rumblings this offseason that Headley could be made available, since he's made little progress on a potential contract extension with the Padres and is eligible for free agency after next season, but the Padres appear content to keep him. The 29-year-old is a strong bounce-back candidate in 2014, and an intriguing option in the middle rounds of fantasy drafts.

Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports that the White Sox have shown interest in Chase Headley. Van Schouwen adds, however, that "indications are the Padres might wait until midseason to shop him," and that the third baseman "wouldn't make much sense" for the Sox unless he agrees to an extension. The White Sox are slated to go into the 2014 season with a combination of Conor Gillaspie and Jeff Keppinger at third base, so it's no surprise they're looking to upgrade at the hot corner.
