Smith allowed three earned runs on two hits while walking six and striking out four across three innings and took the loss Thursday against the Phillies.
EDGE Analysis
Smith had no idea where the ball was going once it left his hand on Thursday afternoon as he managed to get just 40 of his 77 pitches in the strike zone. That was the biggest problem for him--he didn't allow the Phillies an extra base hit-- and significantly ran up his pitch count as it took him 77 pitches to get through three innings. After a strong season debut, Smith got a dose of reality Thursday.

Smith gave up one run on four hits and three walks over 5.1 innings while striking out eight Friday but had to settle for a no-decision in a 2-1 extra-inning win over the Cubs.
EDGE Analysis
The left-hander gave up some solid contact -- three of the hits he allowed went for extra bases, including Kris Bryant's solo homer in the third inning -- but Smith was able to minimize the damage with timely punchouts. The walks and strikeouts did run up his pitch count, as he threw 100 pitches (68 strikes) before exiting, and his fantasy outlook for wins looks grim if he can't last longer into his starts given the weakness of the offense supporting him, but Smith could still provide value in deeper mixed and NL-only formats if he keeps pitching this well. He'll next take the mound Thursday in Philadelphia.

Marlins manager Don Mattingly named Smith the team's No. 2 starter heading into Opening Day, Joe Frisaro of MLB.com. Smith will make his first start Friday against the Cubs.
EDGE Analysis
Smith entered spring training as an unlikely bet to crack the rotation, but he vaulted up the depth chart after multiple starting candidates were lost to injury during the Grapefruit League schedule and many more proved ineffective. With a 5.21 ERA and 1.58 WHIP across 19 innings this spring, Smith was far from dominant himself, and his lack of success during a nine-outing sample with the Yankees last season doesn't offer much encouragement that he'll bring stability to the top half of the Miami rotation. It's probably safe to ignore him outside NL-only leagues for now.

Smith gave up five runs on five hits -- including two home runs -- and a walk over three innings while striking out four in Sunday's Grapefruit League game against the Yankees.
EDGE Analysis
Greg Bird took him deep as part of a four-run first inning before Gary Sanchez launched a solo homer off the left-hander in the third. Smith's recent outings may have cost him a shot at opening the season in the big-league rotation, but his 15 strikeouts in 14 innings this spring suggests he could still have some success with the Marlins later in the year if he gets a chance.

Smith tossed four scoreless innings to close out Tuesday's Grapefruit League game against the Cardinals, allowing one hit and four walks while striking out four.
EDGE Analysis
His wavering control was worrisome, but Smith still has an 11:7 K:BB through 11 spring innings. The left-hander remains solidly in the mix for a rotation spot with the Marlins, either to begin the season or later in the summer after injuries or poor performances give him an opening. He's highly unlikely to repeat the 2.39 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 8.9 K/9 he posted for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre last year, but Smith could produce useful numbers in NL-only fantasy formats.

Smith has had a solid start to the spring, posting a 7:3 K:BB in seven innings, and he remains in the running for one of the Marlins' three open rotation spots, Clark Spencer of The Miami Herald reports.
EDGE Analysis
This battle could go right down to the wire, as none of the candidates have separated themselves from the pack, but Smith's performance so far has been good enough to keep him in the mix. The 26-year-old left-hander stumbled in his big-league debut for the Yankees last season, but his 2.39 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 97:28 K:BB in 98 innings for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre indicate he has nothing left to prove in the minors, and he could surprise for the Marlins if he gets a chance.

Smith will compete for one of the Marlins' final three rotation spots in spring training, Joe Frisaro of MLB.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
Dan Straily and Jose Urena are the only two Opening Day locks in the Marlins' rotation, leaving Smith to compete with about 10 other pitchers for one of the team's remaining three spots this spring. The 26-year-old, who was acquired in an offseason trade with the Yankees, spent most of the 2017 season with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, posting an impressive 2.39 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and across 98 innings (17 starts, one relief appearance) with the RailRiders. He also spent some time with the big club, though he struggled in his first taste of the majors, compiling a brutal 7.71 ERA and 1.66 WHIP across 18.2 innings (two starts, seven relief appearances).

Smith was traded to the Miami Marlins along with Garrett Cooper in exchange for Michael King and international signing bonus money.
EDGE Analysis
Smith made his major league debut during the 2017 season. He pitched nine games (18.2 innings) for the Yankees, over which he allowed 16 runs on 21 hits and 10 walks. Of those 21 hits, four were home runs. However, he's shown more promise in the minors. Over 18 games at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in 2017, 17 of which were starts, he posted a 2.39 ERA and 1.05 WHIP.

Smith was placed on the 10-day disabled list with a viral infection.
EDGE Analysis
Smith remains without a timetable for his return, but the move is retroactive to Sept. 13, so he'll be eligible for activation next weekend should he be ready. The 26-year-old southpaw owns an unsightly 7.71 ERA and 1.66 WHIP in 18.2 big-league innings this season.

Smith was recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Sunday.
EDGE Analysis
Smith had been sent back to Triple-A just four days earlier, but he'll be eligible to return to the big leagues sooner than expected after the Yankees placed outfielder Aaron Hicks (oblique) on the 10-day disabled list Sunday in a corresponding move. Though he had previously made two starts for the Yankees this season, Smith will be in store for mop-up work out of the bullpen in his latest stint in the majors.
