With the Yankees announcing that Bryan Mitchell will start Monday's game against the Twins, according to Bryan Hoch of MLB.com, Smith will pitch out of the big-league bullpen for the time being.
EDGE Analysis
Smith was called up to the majors for the first time Sunday and was considered an option to take the ball Monday for his first big-league start, but the Yankees will use Mitchell in that spot instead, and Smith is now on track to make his first major league appearance out of the bullpen.

Smith's contract was selected from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Sunday.
EDGE Analysis
Smith has served primarily in a starting role at Triple-A this season and has thrived in that capacity, submitting a 2.07 ERA and generating 86 strikeouts over 87 innings. The Yankees have an opening in the rotation with Michael Pineda (elbow) set to undergo season-ending Tommy John surgery, but it appears Smith's Triple-A rotation mate, Luis Cessa, is the top candidate to assume Pineda's spot. Smith will likely instead serve in long relief while he remains with the big club.

Smith, a 2016 Rule 5 draft selection, did not make the Cubs' Opening Day roster and will be returned to the Yankees.
EDGE Analysis
Per the guidelines of the Rule 5 draft, Smith had to make the Cubs' active roster in order to remain in their organization. The defending World Series champions decided to cut ties with the 25-year-old, so he will begin the 2017 campaign as a Yankees minor-leaguer. The left-hander posted a 3.96 ERA over 63.2 innings at Double-A Trenton in 2016.

Smith, who was selected by the Brewers in Thursday's Rule 5 draft, was traded to the Cubs for cash.
EDGE Analysis
The Brewers essentially made the pick for the Cubs, who did not have a pick in the major league phase of the draft. Smith, a 25-year-old southpaw, has logged close to 200 innings at Double-A, but has just 4.1 innings under his belt at Triple-A. Last season he posted a 3.96 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and 70:20 K:BB in 63.2 innings in the Eastern League. The Cubs will have to keep him on the active roster all season, otherwise he will be exposed to waivers and offered back to the Yankees.
