As recently as Monday, MLB.com didn't list Smith among the probable starters for the Marlins' three-game home series with the Dodgers, but Miami will keep its rotation in order after an off day and have the lefty follow Wei-Yin Chen, who takes the hill for Tuesday's series opener. With only two quality starts in eight turns through the rotation this season, Smith has struggled to work deep into games, but he has at least piled up the whiffs for fantasy owners with 53 strikeouts in 39.2 innings. Smith should make for a decent play this week against a Dodgers offense that has posted an 86 team wRC+ over the past two weeks, which ranks 24th in the majors during that span.

Smith (2-3) picked up the win over the Reds on Saturday, scattering three hits and a walk over 5.2 scoreless innings while striking out seven.

The Marlins defense did him no favors, committing two errors behind him, but Smith still didn't allow a runner past second base in the dominant performance. The left-hander will take a 3.67 ERA and eye-popping 12.6 K/9 into his next start Thursday at home against the Braves.

The only pitcher ahead of Smith on the list is Max Scherzer. Smith's unhittable stuff has given him an excellent 33.9 percent strikeout rate, good for sixth among qualified starters. His very high 13.2 percent walk rate has given him trouble, though, leaving his ERA a mediocre 4.40. Still, a 3.73 xFIP suggests that he deserves a bit better, so he could be an intriguing play in deeper leagues as he could provide solid strikeout numbers with a passable ERA. Little in his track record suggests he can maintain a strikeout rate this high, though, as he struck out just 20.9 percent of batters in a 18.2-inning sample with the Yankees last season and his minor-league strikeout rates have been solid but unspectacular.

The young lefty had showcased his strikeout upside in multiple starts this season, but Sunday's brilliant effort was just his second quality start this year. Smith, whose ERA sits at 4.40, has collected 19 strikeouts in his last two outings and will look to maintain his fine form in his upcoming scheduled start against the Reds on Saturday.

Smith could have been skipped in the rotation, as Wei-Yin Chen is making his season debut on Smith's initially-scheduled day Saturday. He'll simply be bumped back one day to Sunday, with Jarlin Garcia's start being moved from Sunday to Tuesday. Smith's 5.82 ERA, 25.5 percent groundball rate and 15.3 percent walk rate are all quite ugly, though his excellent 32.7 percent strikeout rate means his xFIP is a respectable 4.16.

Smith didn't allow his first baserunner until the fourth inning and deserved a much better fate in this one, but such is the life of a pitcher on the 2018 Marlins. The six innings and 10 strikeouts were both season-bests for the lefty, and he probably could've gone deeper as he threw just 77 pitches (55 strikes). Through five starts, Smith has alternated between decent and bad outings, so he'll look to reverse that trend when he takes the hill Saturday against the Rockies.
