Smith was optioned to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre following Wednesday's doubleheader against the Indians.
EDGE Analysis
Smith tossed 3.2 innings in Game 2 of the doubleheader, making him unavailable to pitch for a couple of days, so the Yankees will send him back to the minors to free up a roster spot. He allowed three runs on two homers and two walks Wednesday, raising his ERA to an unsightly 6.11 on the season. He could be back once rosters expand in September, but he likely won't see anything other than low-leverage situations when he returns.

Smith was recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Tuesday.
EDGE Analysis
The Yankees suffered yet another injury to their rotation Monday when Luis Cessa departed his start against the Mets with a rib-cage issue that ultimately required a DL stint, resulting in Smith's second promotion to the big club in three days. Cessa wasn't expected to stick around in the rotation for long with CC Sabathia (knee) closing in on a return from the DL and Masahiro Tanaka (shoulder) not far behind either, but Smith could still be an option to fill a starting role Saturday against the Red Sox, provided he goes unused out of the bullpen in the team's next four contests. Sabathia still seems like the best bet to pick up the Saturday start, however, as he completed a bullpen session Monday without issue and doesn't anticipate that he'll need a rehab assignment before being activated.

Smith was optioned to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Monday.
EDGE Analysis
Smith was recalled ahead of Sunday's game against the Red Sox to act as a long-relief option, and after going unused in the contest, there was some thought he might stick around to make a spot start Monday against the Mets. Instead, those honors will go to Luis Cessa, who was recalled from Triple-A in a corresponding move. After being tagged for eight runs on 12 hits and five walks over 10 innings in his previous three appearances with the Yankees this season, Smith wouldn't have made for an attractive play this week anyway had he been called upon for a spot start.

Smith was recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Sunday.
EDGE Analysis
Smith will take the place of Giovanny Gallegos on the active roster for the time being. It's unclear how the Yankees intend to use Smith at this point, as he could be used as a long relief option out of the bullpen, or he could temporarily slot into the big-league rotation in place of the injured Masahiro Tanaka (shoulder). He made a spot start at the end of July, allowing two runs and striking out four over 3.1 innings of work.

Smith was optioned to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Sunday.
EDGE Analysis
Smith was seemingly on the outs for a rotation spot after failing to escape the fourth inning in a third consecutive start during Saturday's game against the Rays, and the Yankees' acquisition of Jaime Garcia earlier Sunday officially sealed his fate. Since Smith wouldn't have been available in long relief for at least the next couple of days, the Yankees decided to ship him back to the minors and bring aboard a fresh arm in Chasen Shreve. Expect Smith to reenter the rotation for the Triple-A club, with whom he's posted a 2.07 ERA and 1.00 WHIP over 87 innings this season.

Smith lasted just 3.1 innings in a no-decision Saturday against the Rays. He allowed two earned runs, three hits, and three walks while notching four strikeouts.
EDGE Analysis
Manager Joe Girardi gave Smith another turn in the rotation after the young left-hander went 3.2 innings in his last start against Seattle. Smith was once again unable to make it out of the fourth inning as his pitch count ballooned to 71 over the course of 10 total outs. If the Yankees throw Smith out for another start, he'd be lined up to take the hill again Thursday against the Indians.

Manager Joe Girardi said that Smith "earned another turn in the rotation," Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
Smith's final stat line in Sunday's start wasn't great, but his showing for the first three innings certainly warranted another start. The 25-year-old lines up to face Blake Snell and the Rays on Saturday.

Smith only lasted 3.2 innings Sunday against the Mariners, allowing four runs on five hits and a walk while striking out two. He didn't factor into the decision.
EDGE Analysis
Sunday marked the 25-year-old's first MLB start, and he shined through the first three innings of action. He allowed just one baserunner in that span, but then the Mariners got to him for four runs in the fourth, forcing the Yankees to pull him from the game. Smith's ERA now sits at a rough 8.10 mark, although he has only two walks compared to seven strikeouts in the first 6.2 innings of his big-league career. Should he be allowed to make another start in New York, Smith would line up to face the Rays on Saturday.

Smith will start Sunday against the Mariners, Erik Boland of Newsday reports.
EDGE Analysis
Luis Cessa had initially been slated to take the ball for Sunday's tilt, and it's unclear if the late change is a result of an injury or something else. Either way, Smith will make the first start of his big league career after a terrific campaign in the minors in which the 25-year-old went 8-0 with a 2.07 ERA and 86 strikeouts in 87 innings in 16 games (15 starts) at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre this season. At this point it's unclear if Smith will stay in the rotation beyond this start, but the Yankees do have a hole to fill with Michael Pineda recently undergoing season-ending Tommy John surgery.

Smith (0-1) took the loss in his major league debut after allowing two runs on four hits with one walk and five strikeouts in three innings out of the bullpen Monday in Minnesota.
EDGE Analysis
Smith was in contention to start this game, but ended up relieving Bryan Mitchell with most of New York's bullpen arms unavailable coming off a 16-inning game and a doubleheader on consecutive days. He was perfect in his first two innings of work before allowing the Twins to break a 2-2 tie with two runs in the eighth. The 25-year-old lefty was 8-0 with a 2.07 ERA as a starter at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, but it looks like he'll operate out of the bullpen for now with the big club.
