Smith (Grade 3 lat strain) thinks he will miss the rest of the season, and will consider having surgery on his shoulder, which could allow him to return fully healthy for the 2018 campaign, Andre Fernandez of the Miami Herald reports.
EDGE Analysis
Shoulder surgery is a dreaded procedure for pitchers, so while it's possible it could allow Smith to enter 2019 fully healthy, that outcome is not guaranteed. Nonetheless, that appears to be where this situation is headed. Those in redraft leagues can cut bait on Smith, who leads all rookies with 88 strikeouts in 77.1 innings.

Smith has a Grade 3 lat strain and will miss substantial time, Joe Frisaro of MLB.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
This may not end up being the worst-case scenario, but it's pretty bad, as it's possible Smith doesn't return at all this season. He was pacing all rookie pitchers in strikeouts (88), and his ability to rack up whiffs had made him a viable option in the majority of formats. In mixed leagues that don't have DL spots or keepers, Smith can probably be cut loose, as he should miss at least a couple months.

Smith (shoulder) was placed on the 10-day disabled list Sunday, Craig Mish of Sirius XM reports.
EDGE Analysis
Smith, who was pulled from Sunday's start against the Rockies after 1.1 innings with left shoulder tightness, will get an MRI on Monday, Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald reports. Ben Meyer is being recalled from Triple-A New Orleans in a corresponding move, but it is unclear who will take Smith's spot in the rotation. It could be Meyer, or based on the way the schedule lines up, it could be Sandy Alcantara, Odrisamer Despaigne or Dillon Peters.

Contrary to a previous report, Smith left Sunday's game against the Rockies with left shoulder tightness and is considered day-to-day, Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald reports.
EDGE Analysis
It was originally reported that Smith appeared to leave with a groin injury, but this is a bit more concerning. While the team is saying he is day-to-day, the shoulder ailment was serious enough to force Smith out of this start after just 1.1 innings, so it's quite possible he ends up missing significant time. He will likely get a series of tests on his shoulder in the coming days, at which point more information about his timetable should become available.

Smith left Sunday's start against the Rockies with an apparent groin injury, Nick Groke of The Athletic Denver reports. He gave up two earned runs on one hit and one walk while striking out one in 1.1 innings before exiting.
EDGE Analysis
While it apparently was not an arm injury, a groin injury could still end up costing Smith some turns in the rotation. His status will be updated when the team provides an official diagnosis, but for now he should be considered a very risky start for next week, as it's quite possible he won't be ready to return to the mound in the next week.

Smith allowed four runs on six hits and two walks with four strikeouts through four innings in a no-decision Monday against San Francisco.
EDGE Analysis
Smith failed to complete the fifth inning for the fifth time in 15 starts. As nasty as he is, sometimes he can't harness his entire arsenal. Monday, he kept missing with his changeup, which wound up accounting for three of the six hits Smith allowed. Smith's fastball has some serious heat and his slider is a big-time strikeout pitch, but he needs to pull it all together before he can make the next step. Smith will carry a 4.03 ERA into his next start Sunday against the Rockies.

Smith (personal) was reinstated from the bereavement list and will start Monday's game against the Giants, Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald reports.
EDGE Analysis
As expected, Smith is back with the Marlins ahead of his scheduled start after spending the weekend on the bereavement list. The 26-year-old owns a solid 3.75 ERA and 83:30 K:BB across 14 starts (72 innings) this season and will look to keep things rolling Monday. Merandy Gonzalez was sent to the minors in a corresponding roster move.

Smith will be placed on the bereavement list Thursday, Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald reports.
EDGE Analysis
Smith will be away from the team for a minimum of three games but this isn't expected to impact his next scheduled start, which comes against San Francisco on Monday. Through 14 starts in the 2018 season, Smith has logged a 3.75 ERA and 1.19 WHIP with an 83:30 K:BB across 72 innings.

Smith (5-6) picked up the win in Friday's 4-0 victory over the Padres, allowing four hits and two walks over 5.1 innings while striking out five.
EDGE Analysis
He threw 56 of 92 pitches for strikes and made a relatively early exit after loading the bases with one out in the sixth inning, but Brad Ziegler was able to induce a double play to protect Smith's 3.70 ERA as well as his win. The left-hander will next take the mound Wednesday at home against the Giants, looking for his fourth win in five outings.

Smith (4-5) allowed one run on four hits and a walk with four strikeouts through seven innings in a win Monday over the Padres.
EDGE Analysis
Smith will finish May with a sharp 2.60 ERA and 1.05 WHIP thanks to 28 strikeouts through 27.2 innings. The slider was dancing for Smith on Monday, as he induced four swinging strikes and four outs in play on just 30 sliders. He has bounced back admirably from a terrible start, as he owned a 6.89 ERA and 1.98 WHIP through his first four starts. Even if the Marlins lineup will make him work hard for his wins, Smith is just one of 10 qualified starters with an 11.0 K/9, making him fantasy viable even on this poor Miami squad.
