Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com was told by a source that a trade of Andre Ethier is "not happening."
ESPN's Buster Olney reported Monday that the Dodgers are "open to the idea" of trading Ethier this offseason, but Heyman writes that the report was shot down by two people familiar with the team's thinking. Ethier just signed an extension with the Dodgers in June which will pay him $85 million over the next five seasons. Many believed that the contract was a reach in the first place, so if the Dodgers are legitimately looking for a match, they would likely have to pick up some of the tab or take back a similarly questionable contract.

Buster Olney of ESPN.com reports that the Dodgers are "open to the idea" of trading Andre Ethier this offseason.
It's certainly a surprise given that the Dodgers just inked Ethier to a five-year, $85 million extension during the season, but perhaps they're already willing to concede that they overpaid him. Of course, other teams also know that Ethier is making too much money, so the Dodgers would likely have to eat a good chunk of the deal to get something done. A trade of the 30-year-old doesn't seem particularly likely.

Andre Ethier doubled, scored a run and drew a walk in Wednesday's 5-1, season-ending win over the Giants.
The double was Ethier's 36th of the season. Ethier finishes 2012 with a tidy .284/.351/.460 slash, but the story of his campaign was his continued inability to hit left-handed pitching. Ethier hit an unbelievably bad .222/.276/.330 against southpaws this season. Manager Don Matthingly has hinted Ethier could be a platoon player in 2013, but his $13.5 million salary may make that decision unpopular with the front office.

Dodgers manager Don Mattingly has indicated that Andre Ethier might be a platoon player next season.
"I can say all day long that I think he's capable of hitting against lefties, but if the numbers keep telling us that maybe he can't, then we have to go a different route," Mattingly said. It was telling when Ethier, who is batting just .215/.270/.321 this season against southpaws, didn't start Wednesday against Padres lefty Clayton Richard. The Dodgers in June gave the 30-year-old a five-year, $85 million extension, which is a lot to pay a potential platoon player.

Andre Ethier belted a solo homer for the second straight game in an extra-inning loss to the Padres on Tuesday.
He finished the night 1-for-5. His solo blast came off starter Eric Stults, evening the score at 1-1 in the second inning. He's been extremely streaky this season, but his overall line looks very solid at .292/.360/.475 with 17 homers and 81 driven in.

Andre Ethier hit a game-tying homer in the ninth and scored the winning run in the 11th in Monday's comeback win over the Padres.
Ethier put a Luke Gregerson pitch just over the right field wall with one out in the ninth, and he started a two-out rally in the 11th with a single. It's the Dodgers' second straight thrilling comeback win, as they scored two in the ninth off D'Backs closer J.J. Putz Sunday. Though his home run total this season (16) has been a little disappointing, Ethier's .293 batting mark and 79 RBI have suited the Dodgers just fine.

Andre Ethier had his second straight 4-for-4 game and homered Saturday after being dropped to the sixth spot in the Dodgers lineup.
Ethier was dropped from fourth to sixth to make room for Adrian Gonzalez. It's certainly the right move based on the way Ethier has played the last couple of months, but if this 10-for-12 streak he's on the last three days is the start of something good, it would make sense to bat him second.

Andre Ethier went 4-for-4 with a homer and four RBI as the Dodgers topped the Marlins 11-4 on Friday.
Ethier has six hits the last two games after going hitless in his four previous games. The homer tonight was just his fourth since the beginning of June. Ethier figures to be removed from the cleanup spot for the Dodgers with Adrian Gonzalez apparently set to join the team. The Dodgers might want to bat him fifth against righties and sixth versus lefties.

Andre Ethier went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored in Wednesday's loss to the Giants.
The double was Ethier's 30th, giving him at least 30 two-baggers in each of the past six seasons. The big news, however, is that his second hit was a single off tough Giants lefty Jeremy Affeldt. Ethier is just 36-for-165 (.218) vs. southpaws in 2012. On the whole, he's now batting .278/.347/.440.
