Darling will tend the twine in Sunday's preseason finale versus the Predators, Brooks Bratten of the Predators' official site reports.

Darling played strong against the Preds earlier in the week, steering away 27 of 28 shots for a 4-1 win. He hasn't been guaranteed the starting gig once the regular season commences, so Darling still has a lot to prove in exhibition outings.

Darling is coming off a disappointing 2017-18 season that raised questions about his ability to be a No. 1 starter in the NHL. However, the same could also be said about Mrazek's season last year with the Red Wings and Flyers, so it's no surprise to see both goalies start this season on the same footing. Unfortunately, for fantasy purposes, that makes it difficult to pick one over the other in most standard formats. Combine that with the Canes' relative lack of offense (they ranked 23rd in the league in goals scored last season), and you might want to stay away from both guys in the early going, at least until one of them emerges as the team's everyday starter.

This is exactly what the Hurricanes were hoping to see out of Darling, though he also benefited from a stellar performance by the team in front of him. Carolina limited Nashville to just 14 shots without a goal through two periods, and the score was 4-0 by the time Ryan Johansen finally ended Darling's shutout bid with under seven minutes remaining in the third. If Darling gets the Opening Night start over Petr Mrazek, this effort could be a big part of the reason why.

Darling will give way to Alex Nedeljkovic after 40 minutes between the pipes. The former Blackhawk saved all 16 shots from the Lightning over half a game last Wednesday.

Darling will guard the goal Wednesday against the Lightning and will play around 30 minutes, Michael Smith of the team's official site reports.

Darling is slated to play about half of the game for the Hurricanes, much like Petr Mrazek did Tuesday when the same two teams clashed in Tampa. Callum Booth will spell him in the second half of Wednesday's affair as Darling and Mrazek continue to battle for positioning atop the goaltender pecking order.

Darling had the worst season of his career in 2017-18, finishing with a 24-21-7 record, 3.18 GAA and .888 save percentage.

Darling was expected to take over for the aging Cam Ward as the Canes' starter last season, after signing a four-year, $16.6 million contract with in May of last year. However, despite three very good seasons with the Blackhawks (albeit in mostly a secondary role), Darling was clearly not ready to inherit the role of No. 1 netminder, and spent most of the season as Ward's backup. Looking ahead, Darling's role with the team next season remains uncertain, but with three years left on his contract, he likely isn't going anywhere. The Canes could decide to give him a second shot at the starter's role, or or bring in some new blood. Either way, Darling represents a risky selection from a fantasy standpoint.

Bringing in Darling to be their new top netminder proved to be a failure for the Hurricanes this season. The 29-year-old has started 40 games, but he's only managed to win 13 of them. The fact he's posted a 3.18 GAA and .888 save percentage certainly play into his poor record. Now it appears that neither Darling nor Cam Ward are the answer in Carolina.

Darling will try to stop pucks from the Flyers in Philadelphia on Thursday, Adam Kimelman of NHL.com reports.

EDGE Analysis

The Hurricanes are out of the playoff picture, but the home team needs only one point to clinch a playoff spot. As such, expect Darling to be kept on his toes throughout the upcoming contest. Philadelphia ranks 2nd in the league in faceoffs and its tied with five other clubs for 11th in scoring. It's been difficult to trust Darling based on his 13-20-7 record, 3.15 GAA and .888 save percentage, and outside of his random 20-save win over the Capitals last Friday, there's been very little to suggest that he'll finish strong.

While it's been a season to forget for Darling, he's been slightly better of late with a .920 save percentage through his past three outings. However, with a 13-20-7 record, .888 save percentage and 3.15 GAA for the campaign, it's been difficult to trust the 29-year-old netminder. Darling has three more years on his contract at a $4.15 million cap hit, so he will likely be given another opportunity to find his game and claim the No. 1 job next season.

Darling will patrol the crease against Florida on Monday.

After allowing seven goals on 30 shots to Edmonton on Mar. 20, Darling has bounced back strong posting a .924 save percentage in his last two games against New Jersey and Washington respectfully. However, he should receive a different intensity on the road Monday as Florida is fighting for its postseasons life, desperately needing points to stay in the wild card race. Florida also sends 34.6 shots on net per game -- the most in the NHL -- so it'll presumably be a busy night for the 29-year-old as he attempts to notch victory number 14 of the season.
