Now with just 14 points after 40 games, Slavin will likely once again flirt with the 30-point plateau, especially since he's seeing much more time on the power play this year (averaging 2:11 per game, compared to just 0:37 last season). However, if you're in a league that counts plus-minus, his team-worst minus-16 rating isn't going to help you. He probably fits best as a depth defenseman in most formats, so use him sparingly.

Thursday's power-play marker was Slavin's second in as many games and moved him to two goals and seven points on the season. The 24-year-old has points in six of 16 games this season and as good as he's been in recent showings, Slavin remains a risky fantasy play most nights.

EDGE Analysis

Slavin continues to see a decent amount of ice time, averaging 22:41 per game (including 2:18 on the power play), skating on the Canes' top defensive pairing opposite Dougie Hamilton. That usually puts him in around the 30-point mark by the end of the season. Not spectacular by any means, but if you drafted him with that level of production in mind, you shouldn't be disappointed.

Slavin's owners may have been hoping for more, considering the lopsided score. However, they can take comfort in Slavin's ice time of 25:32 -- highest among all skaters -- including 3:22 on the power play. Given the Canes' improved offensive attack this season, if Slavin continues to see similar minutes, the points will come.

This marks the second straight pre-season contest that Slavin has recorded multiple power-play points. The 24-year-old defensemen should be a solid top-four defenseman for the Hurricanes and warrants a look in standard formats given that he's coming off back-to-back 30+ point seasons.

Despite his success on the scoresheet in this one, Slavin found himself working behind Justin Faulk and new Hurricane Dougie Hamilton with the man advantage, a situation likely to continue into the regular season. Only two of Slavin's 30 points last season came on the power play, so while the addition of Hamilton doesn't hurt Slavin's fantasy outlook, it does put a firm cap on the 24-year-old's ceiling.

Slavin averaged 22:35 of ice time during the 2017-18 season skating on the first pairing, and had 30 points (eight goals, 22 assists) along with 154 shots on goal.

EDGE Analysis

Although Slavin hasn't necessarily 'broken out' offensively, he's now had strong campaigns each of his first three seasons, and asserted his value as one of Carolina's defensemen of the future. In 2017-18, Slavin was more shooter happy than his previous years as he fired 154 shots on goal -- he threw 99 and 84 shots on net during his first two seasons. The 24-year-old also had an impressive 54.6 Corsi given his heavy usage, and figures to only see increased responsibility going forward from Carolina's coaching staff. Slavin signed a seven-year deal in July 2017 with Carolina, so he'll return for 2018-19 and likely play on the first pairing once again.
