Antti Niemi "is very close to being ready," according to coach Todd McLellan.
The bad news is that Niemi will not be ready in time for the Sharks' season opener on Saturday, so Thomas Greiss will play between the pipes. The Sharks won't play in their second game until October 14th and Niemi should be considered questionable for that contest. Stay tuned.

Antti Niemi (cyst) is questionable at best for the Sharks opening game on Saturday.
Niemi skated on Thursday but missed practice the previous day. The Sharks do not play again until next Friday so it seems that to give Niemi the extra time, makes the mmost sense. If he is unable to go, Thomas Greiss will get the start in net for San Jose. Stay tuned as a decision will be made on Friday.

Antti Niemi (cyst) is currently on track to be ready for the Sharks' season opener, according to Sharks GM Doug Wilson.
That's great news for San Jose, as backup goaltender Antero Niittymaki will definitely miss the start of the season due to a hip injury. Niemi had a 2.38 GAA and .920 save percentage in 60 starts last season.

Antti Niemi (cyst) had a long off-ice workout and participated in the Sharks' practice on Friday.
Niemi is feeling better than he was on Thursday, but he'll wait to see how he feels on Saturday morning after a day of rigorous exercise. "If it gets worse - as it maybe has been before - then we might have to see what we do then," Niemi said. "If it's fine tomorrow and the day after tomorrow, then it's a good sign." The Sharks are hoping Niemi will be available for their season opener, but he should still be considered questionable for now. We'll keep you posted.

Antti Niemi (cyst) hopes to resume practicing this week.
Niemi might be available for the Sharks' preseason opener, but nothing has been decided. He was always projected to be the team's number one goaltender, but the Sharks will rely on him even more now that backup netminder Antero Niittymaki underwent hip surgery.

Antti Niemi is making progress in his recovery from surgery to remove a cyst.
He is wearing full gear and blocking pucks before practice. Although the Sharks are not guaranteeing Niemi will be ready to start the regular season on time, San Jose coach Todd McLellan is hopeful. "Put it this way," McLellan said. "He was in pads, taking shots yesterday. He was on the ice, he was roaming around, there were pucks off the pads. In my opinion, he's seven days behind everybody." That might be enough for Niemi to be good to go October 6th.

Antti Niemi still has yet to skate after having a cyst removed.
Niemi had the cyst removed from an unidentified area before the start of camp. It's looking more and more like the Sharks will start the season with Thomas Greiss between the pipes. The Sharks play only once in the first week and do not play until Friday the 14th the following week, so the lull in the schedule could benefit the Sharks. Stay tuned.
