Antti Niemi might miss the Sharks' season opener after having a cyst removed. The Sharks and Niemi haven't specified where the cyst was located and Niemi has been vague on when he might return. The Sharks aren't particularly worried about Niemi, especially with more than two weeks remaining before the Sharks' October 8th season opener. However, when Niemi was asked if he'd be available for the opener, he said, "I don't know about that. We'll see." Stay tuned.

Niemi was the first goalie off the ice at morning skate, an indication he'll receive the starting nod Wednesday versus the Kings, Kevin Kurz of CSNBayArea.com reports. Coach Todd McLellan has remained unwilling to announce his starter for Wednesday, but it appears Niemi's standing as the incumbent will at least afford him the Opening Night nod. Even so, there's a good chance that both Niemi and Alex Stalock will alternate the starts to begin the season, until a clear No. 1 goalie rises to the top. Niemi was brutal against the Kings in his final three games against them in the Sharks' first-round postseason collapse, so he'll be searching for some measure of redemption Wednesday night.
