Seth Smith singled, doubled, homered, walked and scored three runs in the Padres' 8-2 blowout win over the Reds on Tuesday.
Josh Byrnes made some mistakes, but trading for Seth Smith was not one of them. Chopping wood amidst the driftwood that comprises San Diego's offense, Smith has hit .281/.384/.506 with nine homers. He'd have way more than 25 RBI if he didn't have to bat leadoff -- or, you know, play for the Padres.

Seth Smith homered twice, doubled and walked Friday in the Padres' 6-5 win over the Dodgers.
Smith didn't miss a third homer by much, settling instead for the double. In the ninth, he was on deck when Everth Cabrera delivered a game-winning sac fly off Kenley Jansen, concluding a three-run rally. Smith entered the night with a .188 average, no homers and one RBI in 48 at-bats this month. Still, he's been an excellent player this season, especially at home. He's hitting .354 with 11 doubles, four triples and five homers at Petco, compared to .198 with five doubles, no triples and two homers on the road.

Seth Smith smacked his sixth home run and third in five games during Thursday's loss to the Cubs.
It's terrifying to think what San Diego's offense would be without Smith. He's hit safely in 14 of 18 May games and had a 1.372 OPS this month entering play on Thursday. Smith is second in the National League with a .338 average and second with a .615. The veteran has gotten a little lucky with success on balls put in play, but that doesn't mean he shouldn't be owned across formats right now.

Seth Smith went 1-for-3 with two walks and a solo home run in Sunday's loss to the Padres.
Smith has been on fire this season. His first-inning home run off of Juan Nicasio is his fifth of the season and now gives him 17 RBI with a .333/.434/.608 slash line. Smith has hit safely in 12 of 15 May games. He appears on his way to a career year if he can keep it up.

Seth Smith missed the cycle by a single and drove in four Saturday as the Padres topped the Marlins 9-3.
Smith also had a walk to go along with his homer, triple and double. He struggled for most of April after homering the first two days of the season, but he's gone 15-for-27 with 10 extra-base hits in his last seven games to take his OPS from .723 to .994. Whereas he seemed like a prime candidate to lose at-bats to Carlos Quentin, there's no longer much chance of that happening, even if it will leave the Padres with a pretty awful defensive outfield.

Seth Smith went 3-for-4 with two doubles versus the Diamondbacks on Saturday.
Smith was on pace to be the NL MVP two games into the season, but he hasn't homered in 23 games since and he hadn't had a hit of any kind since April 24 before the nice game tonight. He'll lose even more playing time following Carlos Quentin's return.

Seth Smith (groin) went 0-for-4 in his return to the Padres' starting lineup on Wednesday.
It was Smith's first start in close to a week because of a mild groin strain. The 31-year-old is hitting .257/.361/.400 with two homers and seven RBI in 23 games.

Seth Smith (groin) could return to the Padres' lineup Wednesday.
Smith hasn't played since exiting last Thursday's game with a right groin strain, but he took batting practice again on Tuesday and was available off the bench. "That's not out of the question," manager Bud Black said of Smith returning Wednesday. "All that depends on how he does today in the pregame when he ramps up the intensity of his running out here. I'll have a better idea once this game unfolds, how he feels."

Seth Smith left Thursday's game versus the Nationals with a right groin strain.
Smith looked a little gimpy while running out a groundout in the 11th inning. The injury forced the Padres to briefly use Andrew Cashner in left field. Smith will likely be re-evaluated on Friday before the Padres determine how much time he might miss.
