Smith (groin) is back in the lineup Saturday against the A's. Groin tightness cost Smith a start against a right-hander earlier in the week, but he will DH and bat second Saturday against right-hander Sonny Gray. The fact that he's not back in right field would seem to suggest he may not be completely over the issue, but it does not appear he's in danger of missing additional time as a result of the injury.

Manager Lloyd McClendon indicated Friday that Smith (groin) is feeling better and could be in the lineup Saturday against the Athletics, Bob Dutton of the Tacoma News-Tribune reports. Smith suffered the groin issue during Monday's regular season opener, but appears to be nearing a return. While it sounds as though Saturday is the target date at this point, an update should be provided at some point prior to the game.

Smith (groin) remains out of the lineup Friday against the A's. Smith has been nursing some groin tightness this week, but he would have sat Friday anyway with a left-hander (Drew Pomeranz) due up for Oakland. If Smith isn't back in there Saturday to take on right-hander Sonny Gray, it will be cause for concern.

Smith is out of the lineup Wednesday due to groin tightness, MLB.com's Greg Johns reports. There was a mild riot on Twitter when it was announced that Smith was out of the lineup with a righty on the mound, and now we know why. Apparently Smith wasn't available Tuesday night either, but since a lefty was pitching nothing was made of it. He should be considered day-to-day, and his next chance to get in the lineup against a righty would be Saturday in Oakland against Sonny Gray. Rickie Weeks got the start in his place Wednesday.

Smith is out of the lineup Wednesday despite a right-handed pitcher being on the mound for the Angels, the Seattle Times' Ryan Divish reports. Rickie Weeks remains in the lineup at DH despite Matt Shoemaker, a righty, being on the round. The Mariners beat writers were unable to guess as to why Smith was not in the lineup, as the assumption was that he would sit against lefites and play against righties, so check back later on Wednesday for a reason. For now, make sure he's not in your daily lineups.

Smith is out of the lineup Tuesday. With a lefty on the mound, Smith and Dustin Ackley head to the bench while Rickie Weeks and Justin Ruggiano join the fray. This should be the expected strict platoon going forward, which will limit Smith's value, especially in weekly leagues.

Smith doubled twice and tripled with two RBI in his Mariners debut Monday in a season-opening win against the Angels. As expected, Smith saw plenty to hit batting second in front of Robinson Cano. Smith needs to play a big part if the Mariners are to contend this year. So far, so good. He likely will sit Tuesday in favor of Justin Ruggiano as the Mariners face a lefty.

Smith (ankle) will return to the lineup for Wednesday's spring training game, Bob Dutton of The Tacoma News Tribune reports. Smith rolled his ankle prior to Sunday's contest, causing him to be scratched and to sit a few days. The injury wasn't considered serious, and his presence in the lineup should alleviate any worries on that front.

Mariners manager Lloyd McLendon said the team is not worried about Smith's ankle injury, Bob Dutton of the Tacoma News Tribune reports. Smith didn't play in games Monday or Tuesday, but it sounds as if he'll return by the end of the week. He still figures to open the season as Seattle's regular right fielder against right-handed pitching, with Justin Ruggiano likely to get most of the at-bats against southpaws.

Smith was scratched from Sunday's lineup because of a rolled ankle, but it's not considered serious, Shannon Drayer of ESPN Radio 710 AM reports. Smith's injury shouldn't hold him out for an extended period of time, but he could sit for a day or two to ensure it doesn't carry over into the regular season.
