Nathan Eovaldi (back) has shown improvement since being scratched from Thursday's start against the Braves, and could return to the rotation to take on the Phillies next week.
The 23-year-old right-hander has been one of the bright spots in the Marlins rotation this season, registering a 3.80 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and 63/32 K/BB ratio over 87 2/3 innings. Brian Flynn started in his place on Thursday, and would likely make another start if Eovaldi is unable to return this week.

Nathan Eovaldi has been scratched from his scheduled Thursday start because of back tightness.
Brian Flynn will take the mound against the Braves instead. Eovaldi was hammered for five earned runs over just three innings in a loss Saturday to the Nationals. It's not certain when he might be able to pitch again.

Nathan Eovaldi was pounded for five earned runs in three innings Saturday in a loss to the Nationals.
Eovaldi tossed seven scoreless innings last Sunday against a very good Braves team, but he looked like a different pitcher on Saturday in Miami. The young righty gave up nine hits -- including two home runs -- while falling to 3-6 on the year. He'll get the the Braves again next and seems doubtful to match his previous performance.

Nathan Eovaldi threw seven scoreless innings in Sunday's win over the Braves.
It was a much needed victory, as Eovaldi hadn't won a decision since July 12. He's now 3-5 with a 3.40 ERA and 1.29 WHIP on the season. His next start will likely come on extended rest Saturday against the Nationals.

Nate Eovaldi allowed three runs -- two earned -- over seven innings but took the loss against the Dodgers on Wednesday.
Eovaldi did well to hold the Dodgers offense mostly under wraps, allowing six hits and two walks while striking out five on the night. It was a good showing after allowing 11 runs in his worst start of the season his last time out. The right-hander has a nice 3.82 ERA but just a 2-4 record. He'll take the mound again on Tuesday against the Nationals in D.C.

Nathan Eovaldi was annihilated in Friday's loss to the Giants, surrendering a career-high 11 runs (nine earned) on 12 hits in his three-plus innings of work.
Eovaldi walked one and struck out three in the rough outing. A pair of defensive miscues, including a botched double play grounder, led to a pair of unearned runs early. Still, it's hard to imagine why Marlins' skipper Mike Redmond let his young starter head back out there for the fourth inning, where the Giants hung another four runs on him before recording an out and being chased from the game. The brutal start raises his sterling ERA from 2.82 all the way to 3.96. He'll look to get back on track when he takes on the Dodgers at home on Wednesday.

Nathan Eovaldi spun seven scoreless frames in the Marlins' 1-0 blanking of the Braves on Saturday.
Eovaldi gave up only one hit -- a first-inning single to Freddie Freeman -- in a dominant performance against the hottest team in baseball. Something has clearly clicked for the 23-year-old right-hander, who owns a 2.82 ERA and 1.15 WHIP in 60 2/3 innings this season. He's a nice fantasy sleeper for the stretch run.

Nathan Eovaldi handcuffed the Indians to one run on seven hits over seven innings in Sunday's 2-0 loss.
He struck out two and walked one in the tough-luck defeat, Eovaldi's third consecutive quality start. Eovaldi wasn't as sharp as his counterpart, Scott Kazmir, who held Miami's weak offense scoreless over six frames. In nine starts this season, Eovaldi (2-2, 3.19 ERA) has given up three runs or less eight times.

Nathan Eovaldi allowed two runs in six innings in a no-decision against the Mets on Tuesday.
Eovaldi wasn't as sharp as his counterpart, as the right-hander allowed four hits and five walks in his six innings of work. Still, he limited the Mets to just two runs, the seventh time in eight starts this season he's given up three runs or fewer in a start. He's 2-1 with a 3.47 ERA, and he'll take on the Indians next in a Sunday start.

Nathan Eovaldi held the Rockies scoreless over six innings in Thursday's 5-3 win.
Eovaldi yielded just three hits and two walks while recording four strikeouts. The young right-hander struggled in his last outing in Milwaukee but bounced back nicely in a tough matchup. He's now compiled six quality starts in seven starts since being activated from the DL. Eovaldi gets the Mets at home next.
