Mike Leake labored through 4 1/3 innings Wednesday, getting knocked around for five runs on six hits and two walks in an NLDS Game 4 loss to the Giants.
Leake wasn't added to the roster until Wednesday morning, when the Reds chose him to take the spot of the injured Johnny Cueto (oblique). It's outings like these that show why he wasn't part of the roster in the first place. Cincy would surely like to avoid giving him the ball again during a potential NLCS berth, but they might not have a choice with Cueto ineligible to return before the World Series.

Mike Leake has replaced Johnny Cueto (oblique) on the NLDS roster and will start Game 4 against the Giants on Wednesday.
This means Mat Latos will pitch a Game 5, if needed. Leake didn't make the initial cut for the NLDS roster after posting a 4.58 ERA and 116/41 K/BB ratio in 179 innings over 30 starts this season. He hasn't pitched since September 29.

Mike Leake told Mark Sheldon of MLB.com that he realizes he is on the bubble for the playoff roster.
Johnny Cueto, Mat Latos, Bronson Arroyo, and Homer Bailey are all ahead of Leake on the depth chart, the decision will come down to whether the Reds want to carry him as a reliever. "I really don't know yet. They haven't said anything," said Leake. "I can make assumptions, but they wouldn't be 100 percent accurate. I know I haven't deserved a spot to be one of the four [starters], but I feel I can still help." Leake has a 4.73 ERA and 113/38 K/BB ratio in 173 innings over 29 starts this season.

Mike Leake was lit up for six runs in 2 1/3 innings by the Phillies in a loss Wednesday.
Leake had won four of his last five starts. Unfortunately, his lousy outings have tended to be really lousy; this is the third time since the All-Star break in which he's allowed at least six runs and he also had an outing of five runs in 1 2/3 innings mixed in there. As things stand now, Leake seems likely to be left out of the postseason rotation in favor of Homer Bailey.
