Holliday was removed from Friday's game against the Cubs after being hit by a pitch in the helmet.
EDGE Analysis
Holliday had yet to return to the starting lineup since being activated off the DL on Tuesday, but was able to serve as a pinch-hitter for Friday's contest. He was replaced by Pete Kozma as a pinch-runner, and a further update on his status should become available after the completion of Friday's contest.

Holliday is not in the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Brewers.
EDGE Analysis
The Cardinals activated Holliday from the DL on Tuesday but will not immediately return him to the starting lineup. It's uncertain if Holliday will be able to play the field in the coming days, or if he may be limited to pinch-hit duty for the immediate future. Stephen Piscotty starts in left field Tuesday.

Holliday (quadriceps) was activated from the 15-day DL on Tuesday.
EDGE Analysis
Quad issues have sent Holliday to the DL on two separate occasions this season, limiting him to just 11 games since June 9. He's shown enough to warrant activation to the roster, but it's uncertain if Holliday will be without restriction immediately upon his return. The Cardinals have yet to release their lineup for Tuesday.

Holliday (quad) indicated that he fully intends on returning before the end of the regular season, but still hasn't done much running outside of a few sprints, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.
EDGE Analysis
Holliday admitted he hasn't run hard enough yet to know if he's getting close to a return so he could still be a week or two away from returning to the club.

St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Matt Holliday is likely to return this season after suffering another quadriceps injury, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Holliday suffered a recurrence of a strained right quadriceps that cost him six weeks earlier this year, and it was initially feared that he would be out much longer this time. "We’re still very hopeful that he’ll be able to contribute this year,” Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak said Thursday. “A lot will be really determined over the next week or two. It’s my understanding that it’s not as deep as last time, which is encouraging, but you’ve still got to [give it time to] heal. It’s very disappointing because we were hopeful that he’d be back in that lineup. When he was playing, you saw the glimpses of why he’s important to this team.” Holliday will be reevaluated in one to two weeks, at which point a firmer timetable for his recovery could be established.

St. Louis Cardinals left fielder Matt Holliday has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right quadriceps, according to USA Today. He suffered the injury -- an aggravation of his previous quad ailment -- in Wednesday's 1-0 loss to the Cincinnati Reds. Holliday was already on the disabled list from June 9 to July 12 due to a previous injury to the same muscle, missing 31 games of action. There is no word yet on how much time Holliday will miss with this latest issue, but St. Louis acquired outfielder Brandon Moss from the Cleveland Indians on Thursday. Holliday, who is hitting .290 with four home runs and 31 RBI, has played in 63 of the Cardinals' 111 games this season. This year will be the first time he's played in fewer than 120 games in his 12-year career.

St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Matt Holliday is likely to be placed on the 15-day disabled list on Thursday with a strained right quadriceps, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Holliday sustained the injury during Wednesday's game while trying to beat out a double play and was removed afterward. The veteran spent six weeks on the disabled list with the same injury earlier this season. "Only thing I do know, it's the same spot as before," manager Mike Matheny said. "He's getting a MRI tonight. No results as of yet, but trying to get it looked at as quick as possible to see the severity. I can't deny the fact that it plays into the equation [at the trade deadline]. I think once we have a better idea of what kind of severity there is to the injury, we'll have a better idea of what we need to do to move forward. I don't think this is something that we would completely write off as an area where we'd have to look." More information will be released when the results of Holliday's MRI are available.

Holliday (quad) expects to increase the intensity of his running over the next couple days in order to rejoin the lineup Friday, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. Holliday has been sidelined since early June with a partial quad tear, but appears on the cusp of rejoining the team. There were talks of him serving as a pinch hitter before the All-Star break, but the club decided to hold him out instead. If no setbacks occur, it seems highly possible that he'll rejoin the club.

Holliday (quad) will be sidelined through the All-Star break, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. Holliday performed some drills prior to Friday's game, and apparently something wasn't quite right. He'll receive some added rest with the All-Star break, which could be enough time for him to rejoin the lineup.
