Twins pitching prospect Kyle Gibson will undergo Tommy John surgery on September 7. Tough break for the promising right-hander, but not completely unexpected, as he was diagnosed with a partial tear of the ulnar collateral ligament in his elbow last month. Now that the Twins have decided to go ahead with surgery, we can safely rule him out until 2013.

Twins pitching prospect Kyle Gibson will fly to New York on Monday to get a second opinion on his ailing right elbow. Gibson, the Twins' top pitching prospect, was diagnosed with a partial tear of the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow earlier this month. While the plan was for him to rehab the injury, he will be examined on Monday by Dr. David Altchek, the same doctor who operated on Joe Nathan's elbow in March of 2010. If Tommy John surgery is recommended, Gibson would likely miss the entire 2012 season.

Twins pitching prospect Kyle Gibson has been diagnosed with a partial tear of the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow. Gibson will not need Tommy John surgery -- at least not at this time -- but instead will head to Fort Myers, FL in order to begin his rehab. Assuming the rehab goes as expected, the promising young right-hander should be good to go by the time spring training rolls around, but obviously his 2011 season is over. He finishes with a 4.81 ERA over 18 Triple-A starts, though he was likely pitching hurt when he posted a 5.17 ERA in June and allowed 13 runs over two starts in July.

Twins pitching prospect Kyle Gibson is heading to Minnesota to have his pitching elbow examined. The team's top prospect, Gibson has already had an MRI, the results of which are not yet known. The team is expected to know more about his status by Monday, but this doesn't sound good. Gibson got off to a nice start this season, but he had a 5.17 ERA in June and allowed 13 runs over two starts in July before recently being shut down. "You're always concerned it might be an ulnar ligament," farm director Jim Rantz said. "Enough concern that we're bringing him to Minnesota."

Twins prospect right-hander Kyle Gibson was placed on the disabled list with Triple-A Rochester due to a sore right forearm. The Twins were previously convinced that Gibson would only have to miss one start, so hopefully this is just a precautionary move. The 23-year-old right-hander was a candidate to make his major league debut this season, but had a 5.17 ERA in June and allowed 13 runs over two starts in July.

Twins prospect right-hander Kyle Gibson will miss his scheduled start with Triple-A Rochester on Wednesday due to elbow soreness. It wasn't too long ago that Gibson looked like a good bet to make his major league debut this season, but he had a 5.17 ERA over six starts in June and has allowed 13 runs over his first two outings this month. The Twins are convinced that the 23-year-old right-hander will only have to miss one start, but there's reason for concern here.

The Twins are considering curtailing top prospect Kyle Gibson's innings after he has started to show signs of fatigue at Triple-A Rochester. Gibson holds a 6.47 ERA since the beginning of June, including an 11.00 mark in two July outings. He had been under consideration for a call-up at some point, but that's not a possibility anymore. Gibson's future is still bright, but it appears he might need to develop some more stamina.

Kyle Gibson will make his start Sunday night for Triple-A Rochester, so he won't be called up by the Twins. The Twins will likely call up a pitcher after Sunday's game to use as a long reliever for Monday's big doubleheader against the Indians. It won't be Gibson, and it also won't be Carlos Gutierrez, who is on the DL with a weak shoulder. LaVelle E. Neal III of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune said to expect a "starter-type" to receive the call.
