Jason Hammel (knee) is currently throwing on flat ground from a distance of 120 feet. Hammel is currently working his way back from surgery in mid-July to remove a piece of loose cartilage from his right knee. Barring any setbacks, he should begin throwing from a mound next week and should be ready to rejoin the O's rotation in September.

Jason Hammel underwent successful surgery on his right knee on Monday. Hammel has been pitching through loose cartilage in the knee for most of the season, but he was finally forced to go under the knife. He'll need 3-4 weeks of recovery time, but it's possible he could be sidelined until September. Barring a trade, the Orioles are going to have a tough time hanging in the Wild Card race without him.

The Orioles have pegged his timetable at 3-4 weeks, but manager Buck Showalter said he's not expecting the right-hander back until September.

Jason Hammel will be sidelined 3-4 weeks following arthroscopic surgery on his right knee. Hammel has dealt with a piece of loose cartilage in the knee for a while now. He was planning to delay surgery until the offseason, but the pain forced him from Saturday's start, and he's decided to go ahead and have the operation now. The Orioles are likely to bring back Brian Matusz to replace him in the rotation, but they're even more likely to trade for a starter now.

Jason Hammel said Saturday that he is leaning toward knee surgery, and will likely be placed on the disabled list before Sunday's game. Hammel has a piece of loose cartilage that is hitting a nerve whenever he bends his right knee. If Hammel elects to have the procedure now to remove it, he would likely be out until the beginning of September. Which would further damage the O's chances. Brian Matusz is the candidate most likely to replace him.

Orioles manager Buck Showalter said Saturday that Jason Hammel will miss his next scheduled start due to a right knee injury. Showalter added that he would provide more details and discuss Hammel's treatment options after Saturday night's game against the Tigers. While a DL stint isn't yet a sure thing, it may make the most sense if Hammel is likely to miss two starts. Brian Matusz is the leading candidate to pitch in his place on Wednesday.

Jason Hammel was removed from Friday's game against the Tigers in the fourth inning with an apparent left knee injury. Hammel appeared to land awkwardly after delivering a pitch to Brennan Boesch with one out in the inning. After consulting with manager Buck Showalter and team trainers, Hammel gave up the ball and walked off the field under his own power. Luis Ayala replaced him in the game.

Jason Hammel pitched a brilliant game against the Braves in Atlanta on Saturday night, allowing just one hit and a pair of walks in a complete-game shutout. Hammel also racked up eight strikeouts, and didn't allow that one hit until Jason Heyward singled with two outs in the seventh inning. Hammel's transition to the American League has gone swimmingly to this point, as he now sits at 7-2 with a 2.94 ERA and 76/29 K/BB ratio over 80 2/3 innings. He'll look to keep his impressive season going when he squares off against the Nationals at home on Friday.
