Shields (11-6) went six innings Wednesday, giving up four earned runs on eight hits and four walks while striking out six in an 11-4 win over the Rockies.
EDGE Analysis
Shields was far from perfect, but received the necessary run support to earn his 11th victory. The Padres ace has maintained an impressive 9.58 K/9 but had difficulty with the long ball; Shields' 29 home runs allowed are tied for second among qualified starters. Shields is scheduled to face the Diamondbacks on Monday.

Shields earned his 10th save of the season Sunday against the Phillies, allowing just one run with eight strikeouts and one walk in seven innings.
EDGE Analysis
The right-hander was dominant against an inexperienced Philadelphia lineup and his only real blemish came on a solo home run allowed in the second inning. Shields, who has alternated good and bad starts over the past month and will look to achieve some consistency with another strong start Saturday against the Dodgers.

Shields (7-3) allowed four runs on five hits, with four walks and five strikeouts over 5.1 innings in a no-decision against Texas on Saturday. The normally accurate Shields tied a season high with four walks and served up two home runs to first baseman Mitch Moreland. The 33-year-old's ERA has ballooned to over 4.00 for the first time since 2010, and the culprit for his decline in effectiveness is a career-high 3.09 BB/9. The spike in walks has coincided with a career-best 10.11 K/9, so at least the veteran has compensated for a decline in control by drawing more swings and misses. Shields is 0-3 in his last seven starts after starting off the season 7-0, but the upcoming All-Star break should give the righty a chance to regroup and find his early season form.

Shields pitched very well in a no-decision, allowing just one unearned run in seven innings against the Pirates. Shields allowed just two hits and walked one in the dominant start. The righty has had a bit of a down season after carrying the Royals to the World Series last year, posting a 3.88 ERA with one start left before the All-Star break. That final start will come this weekend against the Rangers.

Shields (7-3) was stuck with a loss despite pitching fairly well Wednesday against the Mariners, as he allowed just two runs on four hits over 6.2 innings, striking out seven and walking four. Robinson Cano has been coming alive for the Mariners, and he was the only one who was really able to get to Shields, accounting for both runs on a solo homer and an RBI single. Despite a huge spike in his strikeout rate, Shields has been a bit of a dud in his first season with the Padres, as his ratios (4.14 ERA, 1.33 WHIP) are well worse than what we've come to expect from him. He'll rebound in time, but Shields needs to get his control in line -- it's been shaky recently, as he's walked 13 in his last four starts. Shields next draws the Pirates on Monday.

Shields (7-2) allowed seven runs on nine hits in four plus innings against the Giants on Thursday. He struck out seven and walked two. The seven runs he allowed was his most since June of last year and the four innings he pitched was his shortest outing of the season. Shields has now lost two straight starts after starting the season 7-0. The 33-year-old will look to bounce back in his next scheduled start Wednesday against the Mariners.

Shields (7-1) allowed four runs on eight hits and four walks while striking out five in a 4-2 loss to the Diamondbacks on Friday. Walks continue to haunt Shields, as he's handing out passes at a career-high rate. He's also giving up homers at a career-high rate, so it's amazing that it took Shields this long to record his first loss for the underachieving Padres. If he can't maintain his strikeout rate (also a career high), he might be a good candidate to sell high on at this point, considering his high WHIP and weak peripherals. Shields will make his next start in San Francisco on Thursday.

Shields allowed just one run across seven innings Sunday against the Dodgers, striking out six and walking three. He did not factor into the decision. The right-hander, who scattered five hits on the day, needed just 86 pitches to make it through seven frames and was only scored upon via solo home run. Shields was in position to win the game when he was removed, but a late Dodgers surge took the game into extras and ruined his chances of moving to 8-0. He will take a 3.59 ERA and a 10.8 K/9 into Friday's start against the Diamondbacks.

Shields allowed four runs on seven hits and a walk over 5.1 innings Tuesday. He also struck out six. Shields cruised through the first five innings before an error and two challenged plays led to five runs (four earned) in the sixth inning. He did not factor into the decision as Atlanta took the lead in the bottom of the eighth. Shields will face the Dodgers at home on Sunday.

Shields pitched seven solid innings Wednesday, allowing two runs on six hits and two walks while striking out four in a win over the Mets. Shields (7-0) cruised through the first five innings, permitting just one runner to reach second base. With the victory, Shields set his personal best for consecutive wins to start a season since he began 6-0 with Tampa Bay in 2006. The veteran righty will look to continue that streak in his next scheduled start Tuesday at Atlanta.
