Shields (5-16) gave up four runs on seven hits -- including another two home runs -- in Wednesday's loss to the Phillies, although he did strike out six without a walk.
EDGE Analysis
It's nice to see Shields miss some bats and refrain from issuing free passes -- incredibly, the six whiffs represent his highest total in 15 starts with the White Sox, while this was the first time all year that he didn't walk anyone. Of course, those positives are overshadowed by the simply brutal number of homers Shields has allowed -- an incredible 11 over his last four starts and 31 on the season, the second-highest total in the majors. There's a strong argument to be made that Shields has been the worst starter in baseball this year, which should keep fantasy owners from taking a shot on the formerly name-brand hurler.

Shields (3-7) got hammered for eight runs on six hits and two walks over just 1.1 innings in Sunday's 10-2 loss to the Orioles. He struck out one.
EDGE Analysis
Four of the six hits left the yard, which means Shields recorded one out for every home run he served up. To save you the math, that's a 27.0 HR/9 rate for the game. The 34-year-old appeared to be turning his season around after posting a 1.78 ERA over five July starts, but 14 earned runs in 6.1 August innings has sent his ERA on the season soaring back up to 6.68. The White Sox will gamely trot Shields back out to the mound Saturday in Miami, but use him at your own risk.

Shields (5-13) allowed six runs, nine hits and two walks over five innings in the loss Tuesday against the Tigers.
EDGE Analysis
Shields held the Tigers scoreless through four innings before imploding in the fifth when he allowed all of his runs on seven hits. Tuesday marked the end of a six-game stretch of quality starts for Shields, who now owns a 4.92 ERA and 1.51 WHIP for the year. He'll look to get back on track next time out against the Orioles on Sunday.

Shields (3-5) threw 7.2 shutout innings, allowed just four hits and four walks, and struck out five in a win Tuesday over the Cubs.
EDGE Analysis
This was by far Shields's best start as a White Sox. It marked his first shutout outing and tied his White Sox highs for both strikeouts and innings pitched. He induced 14 swinging strikes in the process and managed to keep the ball in the yard while inducing 12 flyouts. He has now thrown six straight quality starts, so don't let his 5.17 ERA scare you away.

Shields (2-5) took another loss despite turning in six solid innings Thursday against Detroit. He allowed two runs on seven hits and a walk while striking out four.
EDGE Analysis
Both runs came home on solo homers in the fifth inning, and that was enough to sink Shields in this rain-shortened game. Shields has recovered impressively from the legendarily bad stretch that started his White Sox career, as he's now turned in five consecutive starts of six or more innings and two or fewer runs. However, the strikeouts still aren't there and he's still giving up plenty of homers, so it's hard to expect Shields to sustain this streak.

Shields was a tough-luck loser Saturday versus the Angels, allowing just one run with two strikeouts and two walks across eight strong innings.
EDGE Analysis
Shields actually went the distance as the Angels did not bat in the ninth, and he needed just 91 pitches to get through eight frames. He did well to limit baserunners and was only scored upon via a groundout in the first inning, lowering his ERA to 1.91 over his last four starts. Shields seems to finally recaptured the formula that made him an effective innings-eater for San Diego earlier this season and he will look to continue his recent success Thursday against the Tigers.

Shields was a tough-luck loser Sunday versus Atlanta, allowing just two runs on six hits and two walks across 7.2 strong innings. He struck out two.
EDGE Analysis
Shields was rather efficient and needed just 93 pitches as he lasted into the eighth inning, but a pair of solo home runs against and a red-hot counterpart in Mike Foltenywicz handed him his first loss in four starts. After a beginning to his White Sox career that was nothing short of disastrous, Shields has turned in three consecutive quality starts and will look to build on his recent success after the All-Star break.

Shields held the Yankees to two runs on five hits in six innings Monday to earn his second win of the season.
EDGE Analysis
The Yankees' Chase Headley hit a two-run home run off Shields in the second, but then he kept them off the board after that. Shields has settled down a bit after beginning his White Sox tenure with a historically-bad three-start stretch. He has been an average-ish pitcher over his last three starts, with two wins, a 3.06 ERA and 11 K's in 17.2 innings.

Shields (1-2) gave up eight hits but just an earned run and a walk over 6.2 innings in Wednesday's 9-6 victory over the Twins. He struck out five.
EDGE Analysis
The veteran righty, who sports an overall 3-9 record on the season when factoring in the Padres portion of his campaign, needed this one in the worst way. Shields had pretty much been catastrophic over his first three trips to the mound with Chicago, yielding 24 hits and 22 runs (21 earned) over 8.2 innings. He parted the dark clouds a bit against the Red Sox of all offenses in his last start on June 23, and really seemed to hit his stride Wednesday. He fired 61 of 93 pitches for strikes, while notching first-pitch strikes on 17 of 27 hitters. The last pair of outings are certainly a step in the right direction, and he'll try to build on them when he faces the Yankees on Monday.

Shields gave up three runs on five hits and four walks while striking out three over five innings against the Red Sox on Thursday.
EDGE Analysis
Although this was not a good outing by any definition, it actually qualifies as Shields' best in four starts since coming over to the White Sox. Any improvement over "legendarily terrible" has to be appreciated by the Chicago fans as well as any desperate fantasy owner stuck with Shields. With an agonizing 9:17 K:BB in his last five starts and a 6.22 ERA for the season, Shields' greatest fantasy value at this point may lie in helping his fantasy owners tank for next year.
