Shields (7-3) was stuck with a loss despite pitching fairly well Wednesday against the Mariners, as he allowed just two runs on four hits over 6.2 innings, striking out seven and walking four. Robinson Cano has been coming alive for the Mariners, and he was the only one who was really able to get to Shields, accounting for both runs on a solo homer and an RBI single. Despite a huge spike in his strikeout rate, Shields has been a bit of a dud in his first season with the Padres, as his ratios (4.14 ERA, 1.33 WHIP) are well worse than what we've come to expect from him. He'll rebound in time, but Shields needs to get his control in line -- it's been shaky recently, as he's walked 13 in his last four starts. Shields next draws the Pirates on Monday.
