McGee pitched a scoreless seventh inning Saturday against the Red Sox, registering a hold and one strikeout. While it seemed like McGee was going to challenge Brad Boxberger for the closer role, it seems much more likely Kevin Cash will play the matchups. McGee came in to certainly face lefties Brock Holt and David Ortiz, which makes sense matchup-wise for the Rays. McGee could definitely pitch more ninth innings, but it's probably going to require a left-handed-heavy slate of batters.

McGee pitched a scoreless eighth inning, allowing one hit and striking out one to record his eighth hold of the season as the Rays defeated Cleveland 4-1 Friday night. Just when you thought you could rely on predictable usage at the back of the Rays' bullpen, things changed. McGee picked up saves in three consecutive appearances and appeared to be first up for future opportunities, but he pitched eighth here while Brad Boxberger closed out the ninth inning.

McGee struck out two while working around a hit and a walk to record a scoreless ninth and his third save of the year Saturday against the White Sox. With saves in three consecutive games, it appears certain now that McGee has retaken the closing gig in Tampa. Brad Boxberger pitched the eighth Saturday, giving up another run -- a habit of his recently. However, if the Rays get a save chance Sunday, it could go to Kevin Jepsen, as McGee has now pitched three of the last four days, and you'd think the Rays will manage him carefully after he opened the season on the DL.

McGee tossed a clean ninth inning, striking out two, to record his second save in as many nights, and his second of the season. McGee was activated from the disabled list in mid-May but had not been seeing save opportunities as he worked his way back to full strength. There has been no official announcement, but his usage and performance the last two nights could herald his return to a prominent role in the ninth inning going forward.

McGee struck out two and gave up only a hit in the ninth against the Angels on Wednesday. It was his first save of the season. McGee finally got a save opportunity and converted it for his first save of the season. Brad Boxberger, who was filling in for McGee while he was out, pitched a perfect eighth as the setup man.

McGee hit 97 on the radar gun in a scoreless inning of relief for his season debut, per the Tampa Bay Times. The Rays have made it clear they're trying to ease McGee back in and make sure he's 100 percent before they hand him high leverage appearances. His perfect inning came with an 8-1 lead and he hovered below his 2014 average fastball velocity, 95.1 to 96.4 mph. If his velocity is slightly down, expect a few more audition innings before he begins taking the mound in save situations.

McGee will eventually regain a portion of the Rays' closing duties, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. This won't be an immediate resumption of closing duties, nor a complete one given how well Brad Boxberger has performed as Tampa Bay's full-time closer. A co-closer system based on matchups is probably a good move for the Rays, but it will unfortunately limit the fantasy viability for either closer.

McGee (elbow) was activated from the DL on Thursday night, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. Reports surfaced earlier in the day suggesting McGee would return to the team over the weekend, but the Rays will not wait that long, as McGee will rejoin the club after throwing a scoreless inning in his final Triple-A rehab appearance. His role with Tampa Bay is not immediately clear, as Brad Boxberger appears to be fitting in comfortably as the closer. As a result, McGee could be headed for a set-up role. In a corresponding move, the Rays optioned Matt Andriese to Triple-A Durham to free up a spot on the 25-man roster.

McGee (elbow) is expected to return to the Rays over the weekend, Matt baker of the Tampa Bay Times reports. McGee threw a scoreless inning in his final Triple-A rehab start and should be back in the Rays' bullpen within the next two or three days. With Brad Boxberger holding a firm grip on the closer job, McGee could end up as the set-up man upon his return.

McGee threw a scoreless inning in his final Triple-A rehab stint and could return to the Rays Friday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. With Brad Boxberger looking very strong (10 saves, 1.29 ERA, 12.9 K/9), there's a good chance McGee will find himself in a set-up role upon his return. The Rays could still use McGee in save situations with a lefty-heavy slate of hitters though, so take a wait-and-see approach since his value is fairly limited without appearances in the ninth inning.
