With Flaherty already at 122.1 innings of work in the big leagues this season -- with an additional 31.2 at Triple-A Memphis -- Shildt and the Cardinals' brass want to make sure that the 22-year-old is not being overused in his rookie campaign. This move lines Flaherty up for two starts next week. Luke Weaver will fill in and pitch Sunday's game versus Cincinnati.

Manager Mike Shildt conceded Thursday that he's considering building in an extra day of rest for the young right-hander. Luke Weaver or Tyson Ross would be the leading bullpen candidates to make a spot start Sunday if those plans came to pass. More definitive word on Shildt's plans should emerge at some point Friday.

Flaherty, who was originally lined up to pitch Thursday's series finale against the Nationals, will flip places in the rotation with Luke Weaver (finger), lining him up to start Friday's series opener against Milwaukee. Flaherty (6-6) picked up the win in Saturday's 8-3 victory over the Royals, allowing two runs on three hits and three walks over seven innings while striking out nine.

The rookie has been racking up the K's since the All-Star break, fanning at least seven batters in each of his last five starts and posting a 40:12 K:BB in 28.1 innings to go along with a 3.18 ERA and 1.02 WHIP. Flaherty will look to keep rolling in his next outing Thursday at home against the Nationals.

Flaherty (5-6) tossed six scoreless innings while earning the win Sunday against the Pirates, allowing three hits and one walk with seven strikeouts.

Flaherty tossed 67 percent of his pitches for strikes and recorded eight groundball outs as he silenced the division rival. While he'd pitched well of late, the quality start was his first since June 22 and the win was just his second in the last 10 starts. Flaherty's gem brings his ERA to a sharp 3.27 for the season, to go along with a 1.10 WHIP and a 11.0 K/9. The impressive youngster will look to build on this strong performance next weekend in a favorable matchup with the Royals.

Flaherty (4-6) allowed four runs on five hits in a loss Tuesday to the Rockies, striking out seven and walking two in 5.1 innings.

EDGE Analysis

Flaherty has not made it out of the sixth inning in five consecutive starts and has regressed from month to month. Flaherty had a 2.22 ERA in four starts in May, a 3.29 ERA in five starts in June and has now posted a 4.71 ERA in six starts in July. The 22-year-old still has an excellent 111:32 K:BB in 90.1 innings this season, as well as a 1.13 WHIP and an outstanding .211 batting average against. His next start will be against the Pirates in Pittsburgh.

Flaherty allowed three runs (two earned) on four hits and two walks across 2.1 innings in a no-decision Sunday against the Giants. He struck out two.

EDGE Analysis

Flaherty breezed through the first two innings, but he allowed three runs on three hits, a walk and an error in the third before he was lifted with one out. Overall he didn't throw the ball that effectively, continuing a recent run of mediocrity that's seen him allow 10 earned runs over his last 12.1 innings. Flaherty still owns a solid 3.34 ERA on the season and will look to get back on track this weekend against the Reds.

Flaherty (3-4) struck out seven and walked one in a loss to Arizona on Tuesday, allowing four runs on four hits in six innings.

EDGE Analysis

Flaherty held the Diamondbacks to one run through four innings, but then gave up a three-run homer to Paul Goldschmidt in the fifth to lose a 2-1 lead. Despite the loss Flaherty still holds an excellent 3.19 ERA and 1.05 WHIP to go along with an 80:19 K:BB in 67.2 innings. He's gone winless in his last four starts and will look to even his record in his next start against the Giants in San Francisco.

Flaherty struck out 13 and walked two in a no-decision Friday against the Brewers, giving up one run on one hit in seven innings.

Flaherty had a no-hitter going through 6.1 innings before giving up a solo home run to Jesus Aguilar to tie the game at 1-1. This was the second time this season that Flaherty has recorded 13 strikeouts in a start, and he now has an excellent 68:16 K:BB in 57.2 innings. Flaherty (2-2) allowed six runs (four earned) on eight hits and a walk with six strikeouts through five innings in a loss Wednesday against the Marlins.

Flaherty allowed four earned runs for the first time in seven starts as the Marlins hit him hard, scoring a pair of doubles and a home run off the Cardinals rookie. He was still nasty at times, as he induced 12 swinging strikes in 92 pitches, but the floodgates burst open in the fifth aided by an error by shortstop Yario Munoz. Despite the hiccup, Flaherty still owns a brilliant 42:10 K:BB in 39.1 innings to go with a 3.20 ERA and a 1.17 WHIP. He'll look to keep his strong start going Monday against the Padres.
