Giancarlo Stanton told Joe Frisaro of MLB.com that he could be open to an extension with the Marlins.
The Marlins have made no secret of their interest in keeping Stanton around for the long-term, but the young slugger understandably wants to see that the team is headed in the right direction before talking. "In order for the team to have security, that doesn't happen in two seconds," said Stanton. "That happens over a season or over two seasons. You show me that, and we can get something going." Stanton was arbitration-eligible for the first time this winter and remains under team control through 2016. There's no rush for a resolution, but he's only going to get more expensive and a trade would likely be inevitable if no progress is made.

Miami Marlins President David Samson will be a castaway on the new season of "Survivor."
The series begins Feb. 26 on CBS. The cast also includes an ex-NFL cheerleader and former NBA All-Star Cliff Robinson. Asked why he thinks he'll win Survivor, Samson, who once convinced Miami to contribute over $350 million to build a new park in the middle of the recession, an accomplishment which eventually cost the city's mayor his job, Samson said, "I always win, because people underestimate me." Samson and 17 other cast members will compete for $1 million in Cagayan, a province in the Philippines.

According to Joe Frisaro of MLB.com, the Marlins have yet to discuss a contract extension with Giancarlo Stanton.
The two sides were about to avoid arbitration by agreeing to a $6.5 million pact for the 2014 season, but a long-term extension was not broached during the negotiations. The Marlins would like to build their future around the budding superstar, and have plenty of time to iron out a deal before he hits free agency after the 2016 season.

Marlins and OF Giancarlo Stanton avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $6.5 million contract.
He can earn an additional $100,000 if he reaches 600 plate appearances. The $6.5 million figure is just $900,000 short of Miguel Cabrera's team record $7.4 million for a first-time arbitration-eligible player. Stanton hit .249/.365/.480 with 24 homers in 2013 while being limited to 116 games due to injury.

Joe Frisaro of MLB.com hears that the Marlins signing Giancarlo Stanton to an extension is "not going to happen."
Frisaro says the idea "was at least discussed," but "it's unclear if serious long-term discussions occurred," and an extension isn't happening "barring a dramatic change of events." Stanton is arbitration-eligible for the first time this winter, and it's not clear whether he'll ever seriously consider a long-term deal with the Marlins after he was critical of the club following last offseason's fire sale.

MLB.com's Joe Frisaro writes that the Marlins are expected to approach Giancarlo Stanton with a "hefty" contract proposal.
It comes on the heels of general manager Dan Jennings saying during an interview Sunday that Stanton is "not available" for trade this offseason. It's been reported that Stanton would not accept a multi-year deal from the Marlins, which is no surprise after he was critical of management following last offseason's fire sale. However, as Frisaro notes, things can always change if they offer enough money. Stanton will be arbitration-eligible for the first time this winter.

Marlins general manager Dan Jennings told SiriusXM's Jim Bowden in an interview Sunday that Giancarlo Stanton is "not available" for trade this offseason.
"He will be in right field at Marlins Park on Opening Day," Jennings added. "We are building around him." Stanton's name has been involved in plenty of trade rumors over the last year, but the Marlins dealing him has always seemed unlikely. The young slugger will turn just 24 later this week and will be arbitration-eligible for the first time this winter.

According to FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal, the Marlins have reassigned hitting coach John Pierson to the minors.
Miami scored an major-league low 513 runs this season under the watch of Tino Martinez and then Pierson, who was carrying the interim tag. The next man hired will be the club's sixth hitting coach since 2010.

Giancarlo Stanton scored the winning run in Sunday's 1-0 victory over the Tigers.
Stanton singled off Luke Putkonen in the ninth -- the slugger's only hit in four at-bats this afternoon -- and later stood on third with two outs and the bases loaded. Putkonen's pitch to Greg Dobbs got away, allowing the hulking slugger to hustle home and cement Henderson Alvarez's no-hitter. Stanton had a solid season when healthy -- slashing .249/.365/.480 with 24 homers and 62 RBI in 423 at-bats -- but the image of him crossing home plate and joining a school of Marlins to surround Alvarez will undoubtedly be viewed as the highlight of his Age-23 season on the 100-loss Marlins.
