David Ortiz is not in the Red Sox lineup on Saturday and will be re-evaluated, with the possibility that he'll be shut down for the remainder of the season.
It's sounding like shutting him down for the remainder of the season is a legitimate possibility. It's disappointing news after Ortiz returned with a bang on Friday, going 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI, but is probably the best possible scenario to get him healthy for next season.

David Ortiz is not in the starting lineup Saturday against the Royals.
This isn't a setback, and Ortiz's absence is likely just a precautionary measure. Ryan Lavarnway is replacing him in the lineup Saturday and batting seventh.

Red Sox activated DH David Ortiz from the 15-day disabled list.
The Red Sox waited until after batting practice to make the official roster move. Ortiz isn't quite 100 percent, but he's going to try to play through the discomfort down the stretch. The veteran slugger returns to a .316/.414/.609 batting line to go along with 23 home runs, 58 RBI and a 1.024 OPS.

David Ortiz (Achilles) expects to be activated from the disabled list this week.
Ortiz won't play Tuesday, but said he'll "probably" return before the end of Boston's upcoming seven game homestand. Ortiz's effectiveness coming off a significant injury remains to be seen. The veteran slugger has been out since July 17 with a strained right Achilles' tendon .

David Ortiz (Achilles) could do some running drills Sunday.
Ortiz took batting practice on the field Saturday and appears to be making some progress, but running will be a bigger test on his injured Achilles. Big Papi has been sidelined since just after the All-Star break.

David Ortiz (Achilles) is "starting to feel better" but was unable to run or hit Wednesday as originally hoped.
Ortiz will continue to be shut down from baseball activities for the next few days. "The thing is, every time I was doing some running, I was getting sore," Ortiz said. "That's not what we're looking for. We're looking to take a step forward instead of a step back. Now we're going through some things and I'm starting to feel better." There's obviously no timetable for his return, with Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine saying he has "no idea about David coming back. I pray that he is, this year and next."

David Ortiz will try to test his ailing right Achilles on Wednesday.
Ortiz was held out of baseball activities for the third straight day Tuesday. The veteran slugger is reluctant to return to the lineup until he's 100 percent, as he's due to hit free agency this winter, so there's no clear timetable for his return.

David Ortiz is still dealing with soreness in his right Achilles.
Ortiz hasn't made much progress since receiving a pain-killing injection in his heel last week and is uncomfortable with pushing himself too soon with free agency looming. The timeline keeps getting pushed back, so it's tough to know when he'll be ready at this point.

David Ortiz (Achilles) isn't close to returning to the Red Sox.
Ortiz completed a full workout Sunday but is still experiencing pain in his right Achilles. "I'm getting tired of watching the games, man," said Ortiz. "It just hasn't healed like we were expecting. The doctor told me when I saw him in Miami that the injury would take four weeks before it started feeling better." Big Papi received a pain-killing injection last week, but it hasn't worked as well as hoped. The Red Sox had been aiming to get him back in the lineup Sunday, but obviously that won't happen. Late-August now looks like a realistic goal for his return to the active roster.
